PLIKS: A Pseudo-Linear Inverse Kinematic Solver for 3D Human Body Estimation

Karthik Shetty et al.

Summary: In this paper, we introduce a method called PLIKS for reconstructing a 3D mesh of the human body from a single 2D image. By optimizing within the model, PLIKS is able to achieve higher accuracy in reconstructing the human model and offers more flexibility when using accurate camera calibration information. Quantitative evaluations confirm that PLIKS outperforms other state-of-the-art methods in terms of standard 3D human pose and shape benchmarks, while also improving reconstruction error on the newer AGORA dataset.

OSSO: Obtaining Skeletal Shape from Outside

Marilyn Keller et al.

Summary: This research addresses the problem of predicting the anatomic skeleton of a person from the 3D surface of the body. The system, called OSSO, is the first to learn the mapping from the 3D body surface to the internal skeleton from real data. It has potential applications in medicine and biomechanics.

VERSE : A Vertebrae labelling and segmentation benchmark for multi-detector CT images

Anjany Sekuboyina et al.

Summary: Vertebral labelling and segmentation are essential tasks in medical image processing, and the VERSE challenge evaluated 25 algorithms on two datasets containing 374 CT scans. The key takeaway is that the performance of an algorithm in correctly identifying rare anatomical variations is crucial for labelling and segmenting spine scans.

Deep action learning enables robust 3D segmentation of body organs in various CT and MRI images

Xia Zhong et al.

Summary: This study introduces a novel point cloud based 3D registration and segmentation framework using reinforcement learning, where an artificial agent is trained to predict the optimal piece-wise linear transformation of a point cloud for joint tasks. The proposed method shows promising results in clinical datasets with fewer trainable parameters and lower computational complexity, suitable for various tasks.

BASH: Biomechanical Animated Skinned Human for Visualization of Kinematics and Muscle Activity

R. Schleicher et al.

Summary: The study proposes a more intuitive and realistic visualization of kinematics and muscle activity for increased accessibility among non-experts, such as patients, athletes, or designers, through the creation of the Biomechanical Animated Skinned Human (BASH) model. The method demonstrates capabilities for simulated straight and curved running using a full-body musculoskeletal model, but further validation is needed in future usability and perception studies.
