Arkadiusz Antonowicz et al.

Summary: Improvements in diagnosis and treatment of cardiovascular diseases have led to a better understanding of the disease process. A study using non-intrusive visualizing methods on a micro-scale with 3D printing technology was conducted to investigate biomedical fluid dynamics. The results showed that 3D prints can be used to create desired geometries and investigate severe pathologies in the human circulatory system.

Development of an In Vitro Blood Vessel Model Using Autologous Endothelial Cells Generated from Footprint-Free hiPSCs to Analyze Interactions of the Endothelium with Blood Cell Components and Vascular Implants

Josefin Weber et al.

Summary: Cardiovascular diseases are the leading cause of death worldwide, requiring vascular implants such as stents for treatment. In this study, a blood vessel-like polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) model was established to analyze the interaction between endothelial cells and vascular implants, as well as blood-derived cells. The model demonstrated the interaction between endothelial cells and blood-derived immune cells and allowed for real-time imaging. It could serve as an in vitro platform to test the influence of vascular implants on endothelialization and analyze the interaction between endothelial cells and blood cell components.

Erica L. Schwarz et al.

Summary: Physics-based computational models of the cardiovascular system have wide-ranging applications in studying cardiovascular diseases, allowing for simulations of hemodynamics, tissue mechanics, and physiology. These models are used not only for surgical planning, but also for understanding disease progression, guiding design, and generating testable hypotheses. Recent advances in modeling methodology have improved the accuracy and impact of simulations, benefiting clinical care and medical device design in congenital and acquired cardiovascular diseases.

Soft pneumatic actuators for mimicking multi-axial femoropopliteal artery mechanobiology

Cody Fell et al.

Summary: Tissue biomanufacturing aims to produce lab-grown stem cell grafts and biomimetic drug testing platforms, while soft robotics aims to emulate dynamic physiological locomotion. Researchers developed a soft pneumatically actuated (SPA) cell culture platform to investigate the effect of patient-specific femoropopliteal artery (FPA) mechanics on lab-grown arterial tissues. The study demonstrated the potential of soft robotic bioreactors for understanding disease, simulating treatments, and producing lab-grown tissue grafts.

Flaminio C. P. Sales et al.

Summary: Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) is a versatile polymer known for its transparency, biocompatibility, flexibility, and stability. The mixing ratios of its components, particularly the curing agent, have been found to affect its mechanical properties, with increased curing agent content leading to reduced tensile strength.

Numerical simulations of patient-specific models with multiple plaques in human peripheral artery: a fluid-structure interaction analysis

Danyang Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the hemodynamic performance and interaction with femoral arterial wall based on patient-specific models with multiple plaques, finding that stress acting on the plaques in the two-plaque model is lower than that in the corresponding one-plaque models, suggesting reduced risk of rupture for the lipid plaque surrounded by a calcified plaque.

A novel polymeric fibrous microstructured biodegradable small-caliber tubular scaffold for cardiovascular tissue engineering

Andreas Dimopoulos et al.

Summary: In this study, small-caliber polymeric (polycaprolactone) tissue-engineered vascular scaffolds were synthesized to mimic the structure and biomechanics of natural vessels. The electrospinning method was used to prepare microstructured polymeric membranes with controlled fiber alignment, resulting in small-caliber multilayer anisotropic biodegradable nanofibrous tubular scaffolds with radial compliance and mechanical properties similar to native arteries. The scaffold showed promising morphology, mechanical anisotropy, degradation profile, and cell compatibility, indicating its potential for use in cardiovascular graft applications.

Analysis of Turbulence Effects in a Patient-Specific Aorta with Aortic Valve Stenosis

Emily L. Manchester et al.

Summary: This study investigated the turbulence effects in aortic valve stenosis (AVS) using large-eddy simulation (LES) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Turbulence in AVS was found to be induced by a combination of high velocity jet impinging on the arterial wall and a dilated ascending aorta. The turbulent wall shear stress (WSS) accounted for a significant portion of the total WSS in the aorta, highlighting the importance of considering turbulence in assessing aortic hemodynamics in patients with AVS.

Vascular Mechanobiology: Homeostasis, Adaptation, and Disease

Jay D. Humphrey et al.

Summary: Cells in the vascular wall are highly sensitive to mechanical changes. In healthy arteries, mechanical forces regulate signaling and gene expression for vessel wall remodeling, but diseases often involve maladaptive remodeling and compromised homeostatic mechanisms. Disease progression is characterized by positive feedback loops that generate mechanobiological instabilities, ultimately overriding homeostatic pathways.
