T follicular helper cells in cancer

Nicolas Gutierrez-Melo et al.

Summary: T follicular helper (Tfh) cells play a crucial role in aiding B cells in antibody-mediated immune responses. While their importance in infection and vaccination is well-established, their involvement in cancer is only starting to be understood. The presence of increased numbers of Tfh cells in Tfh cell-derived or B cell-associated malignancies is often linked to poor prognosis, whereas their presence in non-lymphocytic solid organ tumors is associated with better outcomes. Recent advances have shed light on how the interaction between Tfh cells, B cells, and CD8+ T cells in lymphoid structures enhances antitumor immunity, but also how it may lead to immune-related adverse events (irAEs) such as autoimmunity during immune checkpoint blockade (ICB) and cancer immunotherapy.

B Cell Function in the Tumor Microenvironment

Stephanie M. Downs-Canner et al.

Summary: The tumor microenvironment (TME) is a complex organization composed of tumor, stroma, and endothelial cells that interact with immune cells to control tumor growth. While the role of T lymphocytes in this process is well characterized, the function of B lymphocytes is less understood. However, there are various populations of B cells in the TME that contribute to the immune response to cancer.

B3GNT3 as a prognostic biomarker and correlation with immune cell infiltration in lung adenocarcinoma

Yuanzhou Wu et al.

Summary: B3GNT3 is highly expressed in LUAD tissues compared to normal lung tissues, and is associated with immune cell infiltration and overall survival of LUAD patients. Knockdown of B3GNT3 inhibits LUAD cell viability, cloning ability, and invasion, showing its potential as a prognostic and diagnostic biomarker for LUAD.

Single-cell landscape reveals active cell subtypes and their interaction in the tumor microenvironment of gastric cancer

Yumin Li et al.

Summary: Through single-cell RNA sequencing, we gained insights into the cellular heterogeneity and intercellular communication networks in gastric cancer. Our study identified an immunosuppressive microenvironment enriched with immune suppression-related cells and the absence of exhausted CD8+ T cell clusters. Additionally, the interaction between endothelial cells and fibroblasts highlighted the important roles of fibroblasts in tumor angiogenesis and vasculature maintenance.

Global cancer statistics 2020: GLOBOCAN estimates of incidence and mortality worldwide for 36 cancers in 185 countries

Hyuna Sung et al.

Summary: The global cancer burden in 2020 saw an estimated 19.3 million new cancer cases and almost 10.0 million cancer deaths. Female breast cancer surpassed lung cancer as the most commonly diagnosed cancer, while lung cancer remained the leading cause of cancer death. These trends are expected to rise in 2040, with transitioning countries experiencing a larger increase compared to transitioned countries due to demographic changes and risk factors associated with globalization and a growing economy. Efforts to improve cancer prevention measures and provision of cancer care in transitioning countries will be crucial for global cancer control.
