Quantitative bearing capacity assessment of strip footings adjacent to two-layered slopes considering spatial soil variability

Haizuo Zhou et al.

Summary: The paper evaluates the probabilistic bearing capacity of a strip footing placed near a two-layered cohesive soil slope using random adaptive finite element limit analysis combined with anisotropic random field modeling and Monte Carlo simulation techniques. The study quantitatively examines the bearing capacity by considering the combined effect of geometric parameters, soil properties, and spatially variable strengths of the two-layered soil. The results highlight the significant influence of the slope angle and the potential reduction in the coefficient of variation of the ultimate bearing capacity factor through decreasing the variability of the upper layer soil.

An improved 3D microstructure reconstruction approach for porous media

Kai-Qi Li et al.

Summary: The reconstruction of microstructure in porous media is crucial for evaluating material properties in various fields. Existing approaches mostly treat the porous medium as an ideal two-phase material, ignoring the existence of isolated solid clusters within pore domains. This inconsistency can lead to computational errors in determining transport properties. To address this issue, an efficient approach is proposed that utilizes the watershed algorithm to identify and eliminate isolated solid clusters, while employing various morphological descriptors to measure discrepancies between target structures and reconstructions. The proposed method allows for the reconstruction of microstructures without isolated solids and preserves valuable morphological information.

Dynamic responses of an axisymmetric thermo-poroelastic half-space subjected to thermo-mechanical loads

Chuxuan Tang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the dynamic responses of a thermo-poroelastic half-space under circular surface thermal or/and mechanical loads. By considering water seepage and inertia of soil particles and pore water, the governing equations based on Biot's dynamic poroelastic theory are established. Solutions are derived in the transformed domain using Laplace-Hankel transform, and then transformed into the time domain using numerical integration. The resulting dynamic responses of the thermo-poroelastic half-space under rectangular thermal pulse load and/or half-sinusoidal impact mechanical load are graphically presented. The study reveals that both thermal and mechanical loads induce time-dependent responses in the vertical displacements, vertical stresses, and pore water pressures within the saturated poroelastic medium, and the coupled dynamic responses can be obtained by superposing the individual thermal and mechanical responses.

Qi Zhang et al.

Summary: We have developed a comprehensive framework that can be applied to porous media with multiple porosity scales and saturated with one or two types of fluids. The proposed model is applicable to both elastic and elastoplastic deformations, and can be used for both uncoupled and coupled simulations. We have investigated the depletion process of fractured reservoirs and the effects of multiple factors on system response through uncoupled flow simulations and coupled flow and geomechanics simulations.

Coupled thermal-hydraulic modeling of artificial ground freezing with uncertainties in pipe inclination and thermal conductivity

Yong Liu et al.

Summary: In this study, a unit cell model of freeze pipes was established to examine the effects of uncertainties such as groundwater seepage, freeze pipe inclination, and spatial variability in thermal conductivity on the AGF system. Results show that considering these uncertainties can help evaluate the additional freezing time required and provide reasonable freeze pipe spacing and critical seepage velocity.

Estimating the thermal conductivity of soils using six machine learning algorithms

Kai-Qi Li et al.

Summary: In this study, a large database was compiled, and six machine learning algorithms were implemented to predict the thermal conductivity of soils. The performances of the algorithms were evaluated using eight evaluation indicators and compared with three empirical models. The results showed that AdaBoost achieved the best performance with the minimal error in thermal conductivity prediction. This study constructed a thermal conductivity database and provided a reference for evaluating the thermal conductivity of soils using machine learning algorithms.

Three-dimensional reliability analysis of unsaturated soil slope considering permeability rotated anisotropy random fields

Charles W. W. Ng et al.

Summary: Spatial variability of soil is an inherent characteristic that affects slope stability. The influence of saturated water permeability on slope stability is not fully understood, especially for three-dimensional slope analysis. This study investigates unsaturated soil slope reliability with three-dimensional rotated anisotropy random fields and proposes a modified covariance matrix decomposition method to improve computational efficiency. The results show that the modified method considerably improves efficiency and that cross-dip slope has higher reliability compared to dip slope and reverse slope.

Numerical Investigation into the Plane Breach Process of Cohesionless Dikes Induced by Overtopping

Kang Yan et al.

Summary: This study simulated the plane breach of cohesionless dikes induced by overtopping flow using the discrete-element method coupled with computational fluid dynamics. The influence of three important factors on the dike breach process was investigated. The results show that the inflow discharge per unit width and convergence area length have significant impacts on the breach process, and the particle size is linearly related to the breach process.

Inundation risk assessment based on G-DEMATEL-AHP and its application to Zhengzhou flooding disaster

Qian Zheng et al.

Summary: This study proposed an integrated approach to investigate the flooding risk in urban areas of mega-cities. The new method integrated the grey decision-making trial and evaluation laboratory (Grey-DEMATEL) into analytical hierarchical process (AHP) (simplified as G-DEMATEL-AHP). The risk distribution was mapped using geographic information system (GIS). The results showed that the proposed method can assess the flood risk distribution effectively in Zhengzhou, and the impact of the 7.20 Storm was much stronger than that of the 5-Yr Average scenario.

Summary: This study investigates the uncertainties of thermal boundaries and soil properties in the permafrost regions of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau through field experiments and Monte Carlo simulations. A stochastic analysis method is proposed for the probabilistic permafrost table, with findings showing that the COV and ACD of thermal boundaries and soil properties affect the depth of permafrost table fluctuations.

Effect of uncertain hydrothermal properties and freezing temperature on the thermal process of frozen soil around a single freezing pipe

Tao Wang et al.

Summary: In this study, a series of field experiments on 1-D freezing processes were conducted to determine the COV and SOF of uncertain hydrothermal properties and propose a 1-D stochastic hydrothermal model. The results demonstrate that moisture transfer promotes heat transfer, phase change process is unstable, and the effects of ACF on thermal processes are insignificant. Higher COV leads to greater temperature fluctuations, while higher ACD results in smaller fluctuations in temperature.

Modeling Seepage Flow and Spatial Variability of Soil Thermal Conductivity during Artificial Ground Freezing for Tunnel Excavation

Pu Qiu et al.

Summary: This study explores the impact of seepage on the formation of frozen wall using a coupled hydro-thermal numerical model, considering the spatial variation of soil thermal conductivity. The results show that groundwater flow adversely affects the formation of the frozen wall, requiring additional freezing time. Through random finite element analysis, two levels of additional freezing time are provided to assist practitioners in making rule-of-thumb estimations in design practice.
