Grain shape effects in bed load sediment transport

Eric Deal et al.

Summary: Bed load sediment transport is a critically important mechanism in various contexts, but predictions of sediment flux are often imprecise. While many studies have focused on grain size variability as a source of uncertainty, the role of grain shape, which can influence transport rates, has been less investigated. This study shows that grain shape can significantly modify bed load transport rates, and proposes a shape-corrected sediment transport law. The findings improve predictions of sediment transport and reconcile theories developed for spherical particles with natural sediment grains.

Leveraging ray tracing cores for particle-based simulations on GPUs

Shiwei Zhao et al.

Summary: This article presents a novel approach to accelerate particle-based simulations by leveraging ray tracing cores in addition to CUDA cores on RTX GPUs. A new, general-purpose RT-based neighbor search algorithm is proposed and benchmarked with a prevailing cell-based one. The study demonstrates that the RT-based simulations are 10%-60% faster than the cell-based ones.

Predicting residual friction angle of lunar regolith based on Chang'e-5 lunar samples

Jiayan Nie et al.

Summary: With limited access to lunar samples for geotechnical tests, accurately predicting the engineering properties of lunar regolith is urgent and significant. In this study, the 3D geometrical characteristics and mechanical properties of Chang'e-5 lunar samples are evaluated for the first time through non-destructive microscopic tests. By utilizing particle surface roughness and Young's modulus, the interparticle friction coefficients are predicted, and the residual friction angle of lunar regolith is estimated to be between 53 degrees and 56 degrees under low confining pressure. These findings present a novel method for predicting the engineering properties of lunar regolith, which can be valuable for future lunar surface engineering construction.

Signed distance field framework for unified DEM modeling of granular media with arbitrary particle shapes

Zhengshou Lai et al.

Summary: This paper presents a signed distance field approach for DEM modeling of granular media with arbitrarily shaped particles. The approach uses a generic SDF-based interface to rigorously model particle shapes and their contact operations. It defines the signed distance inside and outside particles and represents the particle surface using the zeroth isosurface of the SDF. The paper also develops specialized grain shape models and a numerical scheme for particle surface discretization and reconstruction. Demonstrative examples validate the proposed approach and computational aspects are discussed.

A spherical-harmonic-based approach to discrete element modeling of 3D irregular particles

Xiang Wang et al.

Summary: This study presents an innovative and computationally effective DEM method that directly utilizes spherical harmonic functions for simulating 3D irregular-shaped particles. By representing discrete surface points of particles with a limited number of harmonic coefficients and computing physical quantities using spherical harmonic functions, specific algorithms for interparticle contact resolution and overlapping detection are developed, leading to computation of contact forces, moments, and particle movements. The feasibility and capability of the proposed method are demonstrated through simulations, indicating its potential for realistic modeling in various engineering and industrial processes.
