An interface and geometry preserving phase-field method for fully Eulerian fluid-structure interaction

Xiaoyu Mao et al.

Summary: We propose an interface and geometry preserving (IGP) method for fully Eulerian fluid-structure interaction modeling using a phase-field formulation. The method preserves the hyperbolic tangent interface profile through a time-dependent mobility model and maintains the solid-fluid interface geometry through volume-conserved mean curvature flow minimization. The method constructs a velocity field for convection of the order parameter, which reduces the curvature flow and ensures that the diffuse interface region moves with the solid bulk. The IGP method is integrated into a fully Eulerian fluid-structure interaction solver based on incompressible viscous fluid and neo-Hookean solid models, demonstrating its capabilities in simulating various fluid-structure interaction problems.

A comparative review of peridynamics and phase-field models for engineering fracture mechanics

Patrick Diehl et al.

Summary: Computational modeling of complex fracture is crucial in engineering fracture mechanics. This review focuses on phase-field and peridynamic models as promising approaches for this class of problems. The basic concepts, including constitutive models, failure criteria, discretization schemes, and numerical analysis, are summarized for both models. Validation against experimental data is essential for all computational methods.

A Selection of Benchmark Problems in Solid Mechanics and Applied Mathematics

Joerg Schroeder et al.

Summary: This paper presents benchmark problems in computational solid mechanics, addressing classical fields such as elasticity, incompressibility, material interfaces, thin structures, and plasticity at finite deformations. Various groups use different numerical schemes, including (mixed) Galerkin finite element and isogeometric analysis formulations, with some programming codes available open-source. The output is measured using carefully designed quantities of interest, allowing for comparison of other models, discretizations, and implementations, while also showing computational robustness through mesh refinement studies.

Analysis of a new multispecies tumor growth model coupling 3D phase-fields with a 1D vascular network

Marvin Fritz et al.

Summary: This work presents and analyzes a mathematical model for tumor growth that incorporates ECM erosion, interstitial flow, vascular flow, and nutrient transport. The model is phase-field or diffused-interface type with smooth evolving interfaces separating cell species and constituents. It uses a mesoscale version of Darcy's law to capture flow mechanisms in tissue matrix, and considers 1D equations for flow and transport processes in the vasculature. The models for transport, flow, and cell species define a 3D-1D coupled model.

On a phase field model of Cahn-Hilliard type for tumour growth with mechanical effects

Harald Garcke et al.

Summary: This paper investigates a macroscopic mechanical model for tumor growth, incorporating cell-cell adhesion effects, coupled with Cahn-Hilliard equation, linear elasticity system, and reaction-diffusion equation for nutrient concentration. The highly nonlinear coupling between the fourth-order Cahn-Hilliard equation and quasi-static elasticity system poses new challenges. The study presents existence, uniqueness, and regularity results, as well as continuous dependence results with respect to different topologies.
