A resolved CFD-DEM coupling model for modeling two-phase fluids interaction with irregularly shaped particles

Zhihao Shen et al.

Summary: A resolved coupling model was developed in this paper to simulate the interaction between two-phase fluids and irregularly shaped particles using CFD and DEM. The model calculates meso-scale flow around particles and directly computes the fluid forces on multi-sphere particles without relying on empirical drag force models. Benchmark cases and a case study on dambreak wave impact on a rock pile demonstrate the accuracy and potential application of the model in coastal engineering.

Xuan Nan et al.

Summary: This study developed a multiphase fluid-solid coupling solver based on the VOF model and DEM model to predict the motion characteristics and assess the safety of a floating ship. The results showed that the solver was accurate and could capture the settlement trajectory of particles under different conditions. The study also found that the hull weight had a significant influence on the ship drifting motion.

Resolved CFD-DEM simulation of blood flow with a reduced-order RBC model

Achuth Nair Balachandran Nair et al.

Summary: Mathematical modeling of blood flow with resolved description of RBC mechanics has been a challenge due to physical complexities and high computational costs. This study proposes an efficient approach for simulating blood flow with suspended RBCs based on a reduced-order model and discrete element method. The proposed method accurately predicts RBC dynamics and blood flow characteristics, showing good agreement with experimental data and literature. It offers a valuable tool for numerical investigations in bio-microfluidic applications.

Coupling irregular particles and fluid: Complex dynamics of granular flows

Xiaoming Zhang et al.

Summary: Granular materials often encountered in nature, but the effect of their morphological properties accompanied by fluid is poorly understood. A novel coupled framework to study the effect of particle morphology on the dynamics of granular particles is reported here. The movement difference caused by particle shape is greatly alleviated by the presence of fluid.

Signed distance field framework for unified DEM modeling of granular media with arbitrary particle shapes

Zhengshou Lai et al.

Summary: This paper presents a signed distance field approach for DEM modeling of granular media with arbitrarily shaped particles. The approach uses a generic SDF-based interface to rigorously model particle shapes and their contact operations. It defines the signed distance inside and outside particles and represents the particle surface using the zeroth isosurface of the SDF. The paper also develops specialized grain shape models and a numerical scheme for particle surface discretization and reconstruction. Demonstrative examples validate the proposed approach and computational aspects are discussed.

A scalable parallel algorithm for direct-forcing immersed boundary method for multiphase flow simulation on spectral elements

Yunchao Yang et al.

Summary: In this work, a highly scalable parallel double binned ghost particle algorithm is proposed for direct-forcing immersed boundary spectral element method in multiphase flow simulations. The algorithm utilizes a queen and worker data structure to demarcate particle-level and marker-level quantities and communication, achieving fully distributed data storage and scalable data transfer across a large number of MPI ranks. By introducing a double Cartesian binning process and bin-to-rank maps, the algorithm efficiently handles data communication across a vast number of MPI ranks, demonstrating excellent performance for up to 16,384 MPI ranks in both weak and strong scaling studies. The method accurately predicts sedimentation of particle clouds and shows good agreement between simulated mean settling velocity and volume fraction correlations with empirical correlations from previous studies.
