Topological derivative-based topology optimization of incompressible structures using mixed formulations

Inocencio Castanar et al.

Summary: In this work, a topological optimization algorithm based on the topological derivative concept is proposed for both nearly and fully incompressible materials. By introducing a new decomposition of the Polarization tensor and applying mixed formulations and Variational Multiscale method, the accuracy of stress computation for incompressible material behavior is improved.

Summary: This article investigates the role of numerical stabilization in reduced order models (ROMs) of marginally-resolved, convection-dominated incompressible flows. The study compares two ROM strategies and finds that consistent numerical stabilization is beneficial in this type of flow.

A VMS-based fractional step technique for the compressible Navier-Stokes equations using conservative variables

Samuel Parada et al.

Summary: This paper addresses the compressible Navier-Stokes equations in the conservative formulation and focuses on the possibility of decoupling the computation of the problem unknowns. The proposed method, known as the fractional step method, reduces the computational cost. It utilizes a finite-element solver with a stabilization technique within the Variational Multi-Scale framework, considering orthogonal and dynamic definitions for the subscales. The discretization in space ensures stability and the use of equal interpolation for all variables. A shock-capturing operator is also added to solve problems involving shocks. The simulations demonstrate the suitability of the algorithm for various flow regimes.

Finite element approximation of wave problems with correcting terms based on training artificial neural networks with fine solutions

Arnau Fabra et al.

Summary: This paper presents a general idea for correcting coarse models by introducing a correcting term derived from fine solutions, which can be applied when fine solutions are not available. The idea is applied to the wave equation in both the time domain and the frequency domain, and the correcting term is computed and trained using learning algorithms. The method's performance is tested through various acoustic numerical examples with finer discretization in either time or space.

Field-to-field coupled fluid structure interaction: A reduced order model study

Alexis Tello et al.

Summary: The study compared the standard FSI coupling with a three-field coupling and a two-field coupling, finding that the three-field FSI coupling provides more accurate results in both FOM and ROM spaces, making it a more reliable formulation under similar number of degrees of freedom.

Data-driven variational multiscale reduced order models

Changhong Mou et al.

Summary: A new data-driven reduced order model (ROM) framework is proposed in this study, which is based on the hierarchical structure of the variational multiscale (VMS) methodology and utilizes data to enhance ROM accuracy. By separating scales, identifying closure terms, and modeling them with available data, the new framework shows significantly higher accuracy compared to standard ROMs.

Development of an algebraic fractional step scheme for the primitive formulation of the compressible Navier-Stokes equations

Samuel Parada et al.

Summary: This work presents a finite-element solver based on a fractional step scheme for the compressible Navier-Stokes equations in the primitive formulation, which allows for cost savings and decoupling of unknowns calculation. The methodology includes improvements in stabilization techniques and a method for addressing wave reflections. Several benchmark simulations demonstrate the algorithm's suitability for subsonic flows.
