Disconnection-Mediated migration of interfaces in microstructures: II. diffuse interface simulations

Marco Salvalaglio et al.

Summary: The motion of interfaces plays a crucial role in the microstructure evolution of crystalline materials. This study presents a microstructure evolution simulation approach that is linked to the underlying microscopic mechanisms of interface migration. The method extends the continuum approach to a diffuse interface, phase-field model, allowing for large-scale simulations. The results highlight the influence of microscopic interface migration mechanisms on microstructure evolution, particularly the effects of stress and its coupling to interface migration.

Evolution of deformation twinning mechanisms in magnesium from low to high strain rates

Nicolo M. della Ventura et al.

Summary: This study systematically investigates the {10 (1) over bar2} extension twinning mechanism in single crystal magnesium micropillars deformed at different strain rates, and reveals the influence of strain rate on the accommodating twin mechanisms. By combining multiple microscopy techniques, it is found that the evolution of twins under high strain rates is influenced by the competition between activated dislocations and lattice distortions, and unconventional twin morphologies cannot be simply described by twinning shear.

The effects of stress, temperature and facet structure on growth of {10(1)over-bar2} twins in Mg: A molecular dynamics and phase field study

Mingyu Gong et al.

Summary: The study investigates the effects of structure, stress, and temperature on the mobility of facets bounding twin domains in Mg, focusing on the growth kinetics of {10 (1) over bar2} twins. Molecular dynamics simulations are used to study the relationship between interface structures, stress, temperature, and mobility. The research also emphasizes the significance of stress relaxation mediated by misfit dislocations on the mobility of basal-prismatic interfaces.

Grain Boundary Solute Drag Model in Regular Solution Alloys

Malek Alkayyali et al.

Summary: The study introduces a grain boundary solute drag model that considers solute-solute interactions including monolayer, multilayer, and asymmetrical segregation effects. It is found that solute drag scales with solute-solute interaction parameters and that asymmetry in grain boundary segregation introduces an additional component to solute drag. A universal solute drag-grain boundary velocity relation is proposed to explain the sluggish grain growth observed in various engineering alloys.

Machine learning to predict aluminum segregation to magnesium grain boundaries

Joseph Messina et al.

Summary: Magnesium alloys have advantages in applications due to their high strength-to-weight ratio, but properties like corrosion resistance, formability, and creep are still concerns, especially in magnesium-aluminum alloys. This study quantifies aluminum segregation energetics at grain boundaries using atomistic simulations, showing that the segregation of aluminum is influenced by grain boundary structure and the local atomic environment, which has broad implications for grain boundary science and engineering.

Grain boundary co-segregation in magnesium alloys with multiple substitutional elements

Risheng Pei et al.

Summary: Alloying additions in magnesium can modify common basal textures during recrystallization based on their solid solubility and precipitation behavior. The type and level of solute segregation in grain boundaries play a key role in controlling the growth behavior. Further research can advance current alloy design strategies by tweaking the solute concentration in the solid solution.

Twin boundary migration mechanisms in quasi-statically compressed and plate-impacted Mg single crystals

Kelvin Y. Xie et al.

Summary: This study investigates the role of deformation rate on twin boundary migration in Mg single crystals, revealing two different mechanisms under quasi-static and plate impact deformation. The findings show that twin boundaries migrate predominantly via shear at modest stresses and rates, while at higher stresses and rates, twin boundary migration is facilitated by local atomic re-arrangement. This rate dependency leads to marked variations in twin variant, size, and number density in Mg.
