Improved fibre placement in filament-based 3D printing of continuous carbon fibre reinforced thermoplastic composites

Ka Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the mechanism of fibre deposition in conventional 3D printing and presents an aligned fibre deposition (AFD) method to improve the fibre placement. The AFD method reduces fibre waviness and twisting, resulting in smooth filament deformation, less air voids, and fibre breakage during printing. It also improves the fibre alignment angle from ±25 degrees to ±12 degrees and reduces void content to 0.27% during straight-line deposition.

Improved bond strength, reduced porosity and enhanced mechanical properties of 3D-printed polyetherimide composites by carbon nanotubes

Qing Chen et al.

Summary: Fused deposition modelling (FDM) is a fast-developing method for 3D printing polymers and composites. This study focused on using carbon nanotubes (CNTs) to improve the mechanical properties of 3D printed polyetherimide (PEI) composites. The results showed that the incorporation of CNTs significantly enhanced the bond strength and reduced porosity of the composites. Additionally, combining CNTs with annealing further improved the mechanical performance and reduced warping of the printed samples.

Towards sustainability in 3D printing of thermoplastic composites: Evaluation of recycled carbon fibers as reinforcing agent for FDM filament production and 3D printing

Niccolo Giani et al.

Summary: The use of recycled carbon fibers (rCFs) in polylactic acid (PLA) matrix for reinforced 3D printing filaments was evaluated. The addition of CFs greatly influenced the thermal and mechanical properties of the 3D prints, decreasing thermal expansion up to 85% and increasing storage modulus up to 7.1 GPa for PLA/vCF10. The study showed that rCFs can offer thermo-mechanical performance comparable to virgin fibers in 3D printing applications.

Mechanical characterization of 3D printed continuous carbon fiber reinforced thermoplastic composites

Lijun Li et al.

Summary: This paper presents a comprehensive study on the mechanical properties of 3D printed continuous fiber reinforced thermoplastic composites. The results show that the print fiber filament fill pattern and low strain rate have significant effects on the mechanical properties and failure behavior. The mechanical properties of different specimens can be predicted by the rule of mixing, except for notched specimens.

Effects of Fiber Volume Fraction and Length on the Mechanical Properties of Milled Glass Fiber/Polyurea Composites

Jing Qiao et al.

Summary: Polyurea composites reinforced with milled glass fiber were studied to investigate the effects of fiber volume fraction and length on the morphological and mechanical properties. SEM and FTIR analysis revealed a uniform distribution and improved interfacial bonding of the composites with longer fiber. The addition of milled glass fiber led to more phase mixing and decreased hydrogen bonding in the polyurea matrix, but had a negligible effect on the H-bond strength. The compressive behavior of the composites was nonlinear and strain-rate-dependent, with higher volume fraction and longer fiber length leading to increased elastic modulus, stress, and energy absorption capability. The storage and loss moduli of the composites also increased with fiber volume fraction and length. The study highlights the improvement in stiffness and energy dissipative capability of polyurea composites with the addition of milled glass fiber.

High strength carbon-fiber reinforced polyamide 6 composites additively manufactured by screw-based extrusion

Xiping Li et al.

Summary: In this study, high strength PA6-CF composite parts are additively manufactured by directly feeding composite pellets into a 3D printer. The effects of CF content on the rheological and mechanical properties of the composites are investigated. Mechanical tests show that CF significantly enhances the strength of the 3D-printed composites, and the results are in agreement with the analytical model.

3D-Printed Fiber-Reinforced Polymer Composites by Fused Deposition Modelling (FDM): Fiber Length and Fiber Implementation Techniques

Khairul Izwan Ismail et al.

Summary: Fused Deposition Modelling (FDM) is a rapidly developing additive manufacturing technology that can produce complex shapes in a short time. However, the mechanical properties of FDM printed parts are weaker than conventionally manufactured products. This review focuses on fiber reinforcement to improve the mechanical, thermal and electrical properties of FDM printed parts. Different fiber types, fiber insertion techniques, and manufacturing methods are discussed. Three different methods of embedding fibers in thermoplastics are briefly reviewed, and the performance of the composites produced by these methods is discussed.

Summary: The study introduces a recycling solution to manufacture fiber reinforced PLA filaments for fused filament fabrication. It is found that an increase in recyclate content leads to a reduction in fiber length. Tensile testing shows a significant improvement of 20% in specific tensile strength and 28% in modulus for the newly introduced recycled parts compared to pure PLA samples.
