A Review of Research Progress on Machining Carbon Fiber-Reinforced Composites with Lasers

Junke Jiao et al.

Summary: Carbon fiber-reinforced composites are widely used in lightweight manufacturing in various industries due to their excellent mechanical properties. Laser machining technology has advantages in processing carbon fiber-reinforced composites, but there are also defects such as heat affected zone, delamination, and fiber extraction. Many works have been carried out to improve the quality of laser machining in carbon fiber-reinforced composites.

Evaluation of self-healing capability of a polycaprolactone interphase in epoxy/glass composites

L. Simonini et al.

Summary: This study focused on evaluating the interfacial self-healing capability of glass fiber-reinforced epoxy composites by depositing polycaprolactone nanoparticles as a coating on the fiber surface. The deposition process of polycaprolactone nanoparticles was successful, showing good homogeneity and compactness. The results demonstrated an interfacial adhesive recovery of about 50% after the thermal mending process, indicating the induced interfacial self-healing capability by the polycaprolactone nanoparticles.

A Methodology to Automatically Segment 3D Ultrasonic Data Using X-ray Computed Tomography and a Convolutional Neural Network

Juan-Ignacio Caballero et al.

Summary: In this study, a semi-automated defect segmentation method using a convolutional neural network on 3D ultrasonic data was proposed, facilitated by the fusion of X-ray computed tomography and Phased-Array Ultrasonic Testing data. This approach allows for the creation of genuine defect models and addresses the limitations of traditional UT techniques in defect evaluation. However, challenges such as accurate defect localization still need to be addressed for further improvement.

Topological effects of 3D-printed copolymer interlayers on toughening and in situ self-healing in laminated fiber-composites

Jack S. Turicek et al.

Summary: Interlaminar delamination in fiber-reinforced composites can lead to catastrophic failures. Traditional mitigation strategies are difficult to detect and repair, while proactive toughening and responsive self-healing offer practical solutions. Our recently developed strategy using 3D-printed thermoplastic interlayers and structurally integrated heaters has shown to improve composite toughening and in situ self-healing.

Preparation of two-component micro-encapsulated epoxy self-healing materials based on Pickering emulsion method

Rui Wang et al.

Summary: In this study, a microencapsulated self-healing material with epoxy-amine was developed through Pickering emulsion, which showed less impact of factors such as microcapsule size and content on the mechanical properties. The microcapsules with bilayer shell were successfully prepared using two-dimensional materials as stabilizers. The addition of microcapsules slightly affected the mechanical properties of the material, but it still exhibited 89% bending stress and 148% tensile stress repair rate. These materials have great potential applications in engineering technology and other fields.

Strain induced crack initiation and the subsequent crack propagation of fiber-reinforced resin composites

Jia Qiu et al.

Summary: Fiber-reinforced composites are lightweight materials with important applications in various fields. Understanding their internal deformation and failure mechanism is crucial in optimizing their microstructure and interfaces. This study used synchrotron X-ray computed tomography and digital volume correlation to investigate the three-dimensional deformation and failure evolution of a representative unit of fiber-reinforced resin composites. The results showed that deformation parameters have a significant impact on crack initiation and propagation.
