A hybrid method for determination of fatigue limit and non-destructive evaluation of composite structures after low-velocity impact loading

Andrzej Katunin et al.

Summary: This paper presents a hybrid method that combines fatigue limit evaluation with non-destructive evaluation to predict the behavior of composite structures with low-velocity impact damage. The results demonstrate the high sensitivity of the proposed method to impact damage and its ability to evaluate the fatigue life of tested structures. Recommendations for measurement setup and testing parameters are also provided.

Influence of Pulse-Pause Sequences on the Self-Heating Behavior in Continuous Carbon Fiber-Reinforced Composites under Ultrasonic Cyclic Three-Point Bending Loads

Aravind Premanand et al.

Summary: This study analyzes the influence of pulse-pause combinations in ultrasonic fatigue tests on the self-heating behavior of carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) materials. The results show that the specimen heating phenomenon depends on variables such as cyclic loading amplitude, pulse-pause combination, and material damage state. It is proposed that designing experiments based on the self-heating characteristic of the composite and the glass transition temperature (Tg) of the polymer matrix can further optimize the test procedure and testing time.

Experimental investigation on in-plane shear fatigue failure criteria of ± 45° angle-ply carbon epoxy composite

Sepanta Mandegarian et al.

Summary: This paper focuses on the response of materials under different loading conditions, particularly fatigue, in the design of load-bearing composite elements. By studying the variation of in-plane shear properties, a strain-based fatigue life criterion is proposed, which is validated through fatigue experiments.

Recent Advances in Limiting Fatigue Damage Accumulation Induced by Self-Heating in Polymer-Matrix Composites

Jafar Amraei et al.

Summary: The self-heating effect is a catastrophic phenomenon that occurs in polymers and polymer-matrix composites (PMCs) under fatigue loading or vibrations. It results in temperature growth in these structures due to their low thermal conductivities, leading to thermal stress and fatigue failure. Therefore, understanding and minimizing the self-heating effect is crucial for practical applications.

Enabling rapid fatigue life prediction of short carbon fiber reinforced polyether-ether-ketone using a novel energy dissipation-based model

Aijia Li et al.

Summary: This study investigates the energy dissipation behavior of short carbon fiber reinforced polyether-ether-ketone (SCFRPEEK) under fatigue loading. A new model combining thermodynamic laws and fatigue damage mechanisms was established to predict the fatigue limit and S-N curve for SCFR-PEEK. By monitoring temperature distribution evolution using an infrared camera during fatigue tests, energy dissipated during the tests was calculated based on local thermodynamic differential equations. Through analysis of different sources of intrinsic dissipation and their correlation to fatigue damage, the model successfully estimated fatigue properties of SCFR-PEEK with a goodness of fit of 0.964.

Fatigue life prediction for the main spar with wrinkle defects of a wind turbine blade

Fangai Yu et al.

Summary: This paper presents a practical method for predicting fatigue life of the main spar with wrinkle defects in a wind turbine blade. It quantifies the effect of different wrinkle geometry on stiffness in a composite laminate and develops a fatigue life prediction model containing unknown parameters. The model accuracy is verified through experimental data.

Summary: In order to ensure proper mechanical performance and investigate fatigue behavior of AM components, a deep understanding of process parameters is required. Monitoring specimen temperature using the Static Thermographic Method provides useful information on damage evolution within the material, allowing for rapid assessment of initiation of damage.
