Enhancing the polymer electrolyte-Li metal interface on high-voltage solid-state batteries with Li-based additives inspired by the surface chemistry of Li7La3Zr2O12

Ander Orue et al.

Summary: In this study, high-voltage Li metal cells with LiNi0.6Mn0.2Co0.2O2 active material were assembled using a composite electrolyte containing Li7La3Zr2O12 garnet, which showed improved cycling stability. Additive lithium hydroxide (LiOH) played a key role in enhancing the cyclability of the cells by inducing the cleavage of the labile S-F bond and increasing the concentration of LiF in the solid-electrolyte interface layer. It was emphasized that SEI-forming additives should be considered for stable SEI interfacial engineering design to expand the performance boundary of solid-state batteries.

Solid electrolyte interface formation between lithium and PEO-based electrolyte

Elena E. Ushakova et al.

Summary: This study investigates the stability of the lithium metal-polymer electrolyte interface and reveals the formation of a passivating solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) layer at the working electrode when in contact with the solid polymer electrolyte. The thickness of the SEI layer increases with temperature. The chemical reaction mechanism involving the reductive cleavage of polymer molecules by lithium atoms is proposed based on spectroscopy data.

Polymer nanofibers framework composite solid electrolyte with lithium dendrite suppression for long life all-solid-state lithium metal battery

Yuhan Li et al.

Summary: The widespread deployment of lithium metal batteries is hindered by issues such as the growth of lithium dendrites, pulverization, and volume expansion of the lithium metal anode. In this study, a novel composite solid polymer electrolyte blending with polyimide fibers was designed to address these issues. The polyimide fibers scaffold improves the elastic modulus and tensile strength of the electrolyte film, allowing for effective ion transport and inhibiting lithium dendrites. The introduction of stable physicochemical fibers widens the electrochemical window, leading to high compatibility and stability with the lithium metal anode. The all-solid-state Li/LiFePO4 battery using this composite electrolyte demonstrates long cycle life, high Coulomb efficiency, high capacity retention, and good rate performance.
