Effect of Wing Stiffness and Folding Wingtip Release Threshold on Gust Loads

Xavier Carrillo Corcoles et al.

Summary: This study conducted an aeroelastic wind-tunnel experiment to investigate the influence of wing stiffness and hinge release threshold on the gust load alleviation performance of a folding wingtip design. The results showed that the structural properties did not have a significant impact on the peak load alleviation, but the hinge release threshold and timing did. Releasing the hinge at the correct timing significantly reduced peak loads, but also affected the system dynamics, decreasing flutter speed and increasing load oscillations.

Experimental and numerical investigation of an aircraft wing with hinged wingtip for gust load alleviation

Davide Balatti et al.

Summary: An ongoing consideration in aircraft design is the utilization of hinged wing tip devices to enhance the aspect ratio and improve aircraft performance. This study aims to experimentally validate aeroelastic models of wings with fixed and hinged wingtips, and investigate the load alleviation ability of hinged wingtips. The validated models drove the design of a more efficient wingtip that demonstrated improved load alleviation by reducing mass and structural inertia.

Test Methods for the Mechanical Characterization of Flexure Hinges

P. Meyer et al.

Summary: This study presents novel test methods for measuring the bending stiffness of variable cross-section flexure hinges under large deformations and pure bending loading. The test methods are based on tensile test, four-point bending test, and column bending test, and they are validated using isotropic materials.

Aeroelastic Analysis of Actuated Adaptive Wingtips Based on Pressure Actuation

Patrick Meyer et al.

Summary: This study verifies the feasibility of the actuated adaptive wingtip concept through aeroelastic analysis and shows that the pressure-actuated cellular structures (PACS) made from glass-fiber-reinforced plastic can bear the loads acting on the wingtips of a Cessna Citation X. The adaptive-stiffness hinge reduces the wing root bending moment and maintains the wing's stability in flight.

Simulation of the column bending test using an anisotropic viscoelastic shell model

Yufei Long et al.

Summary: In this study, finite element simulation of the column bending test (CBT) was conducted using shell elements with anisotropic viscoelastic section properties. The results showed that the model was capable of predicting most of the measured trends, but viscoplasticity should also be considered.

Accuracy Analysis on Counterweight-Balanced Column Bending Test

J. Gao et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the accuracy of the simplified processing method for counterweight-balanced column bending test (CWB-CBT) and found that within the elastic range, the accuracy is independent of load and bending rigidity, but is related to the geometry. When the ratio of fixture arm span to coupon length reaches two, the curvature error is less than 5.7085%, and the bending moment error is under 3.2173 parts per thousand.

Folding Wingtips for Improved Roll Performance

Fintan Healy et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effect of using flared folding wingtips (FFWTs) on the roll performance of aircraft wings. The results show that using FFWTs can improve the aerodynamic performance by increasing the wing aspect ratio while significantly reducing the aerodynamic damping during roll.

Large deformation bending of single-ply fabric reinforced polymer composite

Jifeng Gao et al.

Summary: The study investigated the large deformation bending properties of a single-ply fabric reinforced polymer composite using innovative testing methods and microscopic analysis, emphasizing the impact of temperatures and asymmetric weave structure on bending properties. Results showed brittle failure in glassy state at 15 degrees C, decreased bending capacity but increased deformability in rubbery state at 40 degrees C. The asymmetric weave structure led to differences in deformability and ultimate moment inward and outward. Gaps in transverse yarns were identified as weak locations of bending fracture.

Recent developments in the aeroelasticity of morphing aircraft

Rafic M. Ajaj et al.

Summary: This paper presents an extensive review of the developments in the aeroelasticity of morphing aircraft that occurred in the last decade. It focuses mainly on fixed-wing aircraft and highlights some representative examples from rotary-wing aircraft. The literature on the aeroelasticity of morphing aircraft can be split into two main themes: Aeroelastic Stability and Aeroelastic Control, with studies categorized based on the degree of freedom addressed.
