Unlocking the role of recycled aggregates in the performance enhancement and CO2 capture of reactive magnesia cement formulations

Chenyu Pan et al.

Summary: In this study, the strength development of CO2-cured RMC-RCA was explored for the first time, and the strength variation among groups was interpreted by microstructural analyses. The initial results show that the strength of RMC-RCA is higher compared to samples with natural aggregates, which could be attributed to its refined microstructures and larger carbonation depths. The presence of porous ITZs in RCA contributes to better CO2 diffusion, as described in the proposed revised CO2 diffusion model. Overall, this preliminary study could pave the path for the upcycling of RCAs in RMC concrete on a large scale while enabling a pronounced CO2 capture potential.

Micro-chemomechanical properties of red mud binder and its effect on concrete

Yue Liu et al.

Summary: Red mud, a hazardous waste from alumina production, poses a global issue in terms of its safe disposal. This paper focuses on the lack of research on the nano-scale chemomechanical properties of red mud binders. The study reveals that the high content of red mud decreases the Young's modulus of the C-(A)-S-H phase, resulting in lower packing density and lower modulus due to the unimpeded growth of C-(A)-S-H gel. The incorporation of red mud promotes the formation of aluminium-bearing phases and affects the ratio of Al/Ca, Si/Ca, and Fe/Ca in the formed C-(A)-S-H gel.

Electrochemical behavior of steel bars in magnesium phosphate cement

Hao Tang et al.

Summary: The electrochemical behaviors of steel bars in magnesium phosphate cement (MPC) were studied, and it was found that the steel bars in the simulated MPC pore solution could effectively passivate, forming films mainly composed of FePO4. Compared to traditional cement materials, MPC exhibited superior corrosion protection due to the continuous precipitation of phosphates and accumulation of passive films. After depassivation of steel bars, MPC showed self-healing corrosion behavior characterized by dramatic recovery of passive film resistance and charge transfer resistance. Corroded steel bars in MPC with a low magnesia-to-phosphate ratio could re-passivate and stabilize for long periods of time.

Microstructure and micromechanical properties of magnesium phosphate cement

Guosheng Zhang et al.

Summary: This study systematically investigates the evolution of phase composition, microstructure, and micro-mechanical properties of magnesium phosphate cement (MPC) and their influence on macroscopic mechanical properties. The microstructure of MPC is primarily composed of potassium magnesium phosphate hexahydrate (MKP) crystals and a hybrid region of magnesium oxide and amorphous hydration products. The elastic modulus and hardness of MKP crystals are 20.18 GPa and 1.15 GPa, respectively. The macroscopic strength of MPC is mainly determined by its pore structure rather than the micro-mechanical properties of hydration products.

Development and characterization of magnesium phosphate cement based ultra-high performance concrete

Jihui Qin et al.

Summary: This study aims to develop magnesium phosphate cement-based ultra-high-performance concrete (MPC-UHPC) with improved properties through reducing water-to-cement ratio and adding ultrafine fly ash. The experimental results show that reducing water-to-cement ratio can increase mechanical strengths and decrease shrinkage, but it leads to a decrease in workability and an increase in autogenous shrinkage. Adding ultrafine fly ash can effectively improve fresh properties and reduce autogenous shrinkage. The optimal MPC-UHPC exhibits lower shrinkage, higher early strength, and comparable 28-day strength when compared to conventional UHPC.

Summary: This paper investigates the use of Mg as an intelligent anode in underground Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) projects to detect the carbonation level of concrete and protect the steel casing. The results showed that Mg was more sensitive to carbonation and could act as a smart anode in carbonated simulated concrete pore solutions (SCPSs).

Influencing Factors of Steel States in Concrete Based on Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopic Measurements

Jaehwan Kim et al.

Summary: To cope with the premature deterioration of reinforced concrete structures caused by chloride-induced corrosion, estimating the corrosion rate and calculating transport parameters is necessary. However, interpreting the impedance response of steel embedded in concrete is still challenging. Concrete acts as a good barrier but can contain unexpected or invisible variables that hinder electrical measurements. Overcoming these limitations requires confirming impedance responses under controlled variable cases.

Effect of borax on the hydration and setting of magnesium phosphate cements

Rita Gelli et al.

Summary: This study explores the concentration dependent retarding effect of borax on tri-magnesium phosphate-based cements for the first time. By investigating the hydration and phases formed in the set cements using multiple characterization techniques, it was found that borax slows down the hydration process, reduces heat release, and leads to the formation of struvite instead of newberyite, without affecting the strength of the cement. The observed boron species suggest that the retardation is caused by the complexation of NH4+ and Mg2+ ions with borate and polyborate anions.

Chloride-induced depassivation and corrosion of mild steel in magnesium potassium phosphate cement

Danqian Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the chloride-induced corrosion of mild steel in magnesium potassium phosphate cement (MKPC) pore solutions with different magnesia-to-phosphate (M/P) ratios. The results showed that MKPC had higher corrosion resistance compared to ordinary Portland cement (PC), and the chloride-induced corrosion resistance increased with increasing M/P ratios. The study also indicated that pH played a dominant role in determining the corrosion resistance.

Chemical and mineralogical characteristics of carbonated and uncarbonated cement pastes subjected to high temperatures

Yongqiang Li et al.

Summary: The study found that the carbonation process can enhance the high-temperature resistance of concrete, delaying the increase in temperature in the inner layer and improving the fire resistance of the concrete to some extent. Through investigating the effects of carbonation on the fire resistance of concrete and the chemical and mineralogical changes of uncarbonated and carbonated cement pastes under high temperatures, it was demonstrated that carbonated pastes exhibit better heat resistance than uncarbonated samples.
