Micromechanical study of multiple transverse cracking in cross-ply fiber-reinforced laminates

Reza Sepasdar et al.

Summary: This study uses a nonlinear cohesive interface-enriched generalized finite element method, along with elastic, elasto-plastic damage model, and cohesive zone model, to investigate the effects of transverse crack density, delamination, and intra-ply stress redistribution on the performance of composite laminates. The developed framework is validated against experimental results and the correlation between different stages of failure and the studied parameters is discussed.

Identification of RVE length scale in fiber composites via combined optical and SEM digital image correlation

Behrad Koohbor et al.

Summary: This study developed a multiscale experimental approach combining optical and SEM DIC measurements to experimentally characterize the length scale of the RVE in a carbon fiber composite with a random fiber distribution. The RVE size was determined by the convergence between locally averaged strains and global strains, and it was found to be stress dependent and increased with the evolution of internal damage in the composite.

Detecting transverse cracks initiation in composite laminates via statistical analysis of sensitivity data

Maryam Shakiba

Summary: This study presents a novel method to describe the microscale phenomenon of cracks initiation based on sensitivity analysis in laminate fiber-reinforced composites. The sensitivity of the stress response in a transverse ply with respect to individual fiber/matrix interface cohesive properties follows a normal distribution before cracks initiate, but deviates rapidly from a normal distribution from crack initiation to the formation. The proposed prediction method of crack initiation can be used as a failure risk indicator to increase the reliability of laminates' designs.
