Biomass intumescent flame retardant polyacrylonitrile composite: flame retardancy, smoke suppression and recycling

Xi Yu et al.

Summary: A fully biomass intumescent flame retardant (IFR) system was developed by blending a reaction product (PA@HS) of phytic acid (PA) and hydrolyzed silk (HS) with potato starch (PS), and then combining it with polyacrylonitrile (PAN) to obtain flame retardant PAN (FR-PAN). The resulting FR-PAN showed improved tensile strength, elongation at break, and reduced heat release rate and smoke production rate, indicating excellent flame retardant and smoke suppression performance. Furthermore, the waste FR-PAN materials were successfully recycled through the preparation of FR-PAN Char (FRPC) for cellulose and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) modification, leading to enhanced fire safety.

Fabrication of halogen-free and phosphorus-free flame retardant and antistatic PAN fibers based on tea polyphenol phenolic resin chelated with iron (III) ions

Chunlong Zuo et al.

Summary: Tea polyphenol phenolic resin (TPPR) was prepared from biomass tea polyphenol and blended with PAN spinning solution to construct phosphorus-free and halogen-free flame retardant PAN fibers (TPPR@Fe/PAN). The LOI value of TPPR@Fe/PAN increased from (17.3 +/- 0.51)% to (31.6 +/- 0.51)%. Even after 30 laundering cycles, the LOI value of TPPR@Fe/PAN remained at (27.7 +/- 0.51)%, indicating good washing durability. TPPR@Fe/PAN also showed reduced heat release and excellent antistatic ability, as well as suppressed release of flammable and toxic gases.

B-N-P-linked covalent organic frameworks for efficient flame retarding and toxic smoke suppression of polyacrylonitrile composite fiber

Hongyun Peng et al.

Summary: A novel boron-nitrogen-phosphorus-linked COFs (BNPC) was developed and employed as flame-retardant filler for PAN fiber, significantly reducing peak heat release rate, total smoke production, and CO production. The BNPC also improved the limiting oxygen index value and offered a cooperative catalytic effect for producing a highly compact and crosslinked char layer barrier. This research provides a scalable strategy for designing COFs with multiple flame retardant elements and shows great application potential in functional polymer materials.

Flame retardant and form-stable phase change composites based on phytic acid/dopamine-decorated delignified wood for efficient solar-thermal energy conversion and storage

Shunpan Yuan et al.

Summary: In this study, a phytic acid/dopamine-decorated delignified wood (APDW) with superior photothermal effects and excellent flame retardancy was successfully constructed. Novel form-stable and flame-retardant phase change composites (ADPCMs) were fabricated by impregnating n-eicosane into APDWs. The APDWs preserved the unique anisotropic porous structure and prevented liquid leakage issues. The ADPCMs exhibited high thermal storage density and improved photothermal conversion and storage efficiency with the introduction of polydopamine (PDA). Additionally, the flame retardancy of ADPCMs was enhanced with the increasing content of phytic acid (PA) in the composites.

Cleaning behavior based on waste textile before resource conversion and its challenges in China - A comprehensive review

Fei Han et al.

Summary: The recycling of waste textiles in the reverse management of the textile industry can alleviate resource shortage and environmental pressure. However, the safety of the textile recycling industry is facing criticism and there is a need for harmless recycling. Commercial washing services support sustainable use, but cleaning for recycling as a resource is often overlooked. A complete cleaning procedure for waste textiles is important for the safety of the recycling environment. The application of various technologies in the cleaning process, such as disinfection and decolorization, needs further research, especially in waste textile recycling.

Facile fabrication of cyclodextrin-based and integrated flame retardant in intumescent flame-retarding polypropylene

Zaihang Zheng et al.

Summary: A hydrophobic, beta-cyclodextrin-based and halogen-free flame retardant (MCDPM) with three components in an integrated structure was prepared, aiming to improve dispersion and flame retardancy in polypropylene. The blend of MCDPM in polypropylene showed significantly improved thermal stability and enhanced flame retardancy, passing the UL-94 V-1 ratings. An intumescent flame-retardant mode of action was proposed through systematic analysis of the char residue.
