Effect of preload and shim types on the mechanical properties of composite-aluminium bolted joints

Xuande Yue et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of preload and shim types on the mechanical properties of composite-aluminium single-bolt, single-lap joints. Results showed that inadequate or excessive preload could reduce the performance of joints, while liquid shims required a larger preload for optimal performance. Peelable fibreglass shims increased tensile stiffness and peak load in joints.

Analysis of multi-bolt composite joints with a user-defined finite element for the evaluation of load distribution and secondary bending

V. G. Belardi et al.

Summary: This paper demonstrates the capabilities of the Composite Bolted Joint Element (CBJE) methodology in analyzing single-lap multi-bolt joints. The FE modeling approach exploits user-defined finite elements and elastic characterization of the bolted region through analytical models. The results of the CBJE method are successfully validated and compared with reference solid models using experimental data.

Influence of gap filling on mechanical properties of composite-aluminum single-lap single-bolt hybrid joints

Xuande Yue et al.

Summary: The research on composite-aluminum single-lap single-bolt joints showed that filling shims can significantly increase tension stiffness and peak load. Liquid and peelable fiberglass shims have different effects on tension stiffness and peak load, with the peelable fiberglass shim performing better.
