Concurrent multiscale modeling of in-plane micro-damage evaluation in Z-pinned composite laminates

Weiwei Wang et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a new concurrent multiscale unit cell model to investigate the in-plane micro-damage evolution of Z-pinned composite laminates (ZCL). The research indicates that in-plane micro-damage initiates from the interface between Z-pin and matrix, with stress concentration and higher local fiber volume fraction playing a major role.

Microscale viscoplastic analysis of unidirectional CFRP composites under the influence of curing process

Xinyu Hui et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the effect of cure-induced residual stresses on the mechanical behavior of unidirectional IM7/8552 composites and validates the results through simulations and experiments. The findings suggest that residual stresses result in earlier nonlinearity and lower compressive strength. Parametric analysis demonstrates the influence of fiber distribution on residual stresses and compressive response.

Cure-induced strain and failure in deltoid of composite T-joints

Shinsaku Hisada et al.

Summary: This study proposed the measurement of strain distribution throughout the deltoid using an optical fiber for the first time. The relationship between strain distribution and the failure pattern of the deltoid was examined, leading to the development of a failure index for process-induced failure of deltoids. The study also established and validated a deltoid configuration to suppress process-induced failure based on experimental results and analysis.

Xinyu Hui et al.

Summary: This research developed an integrated numerical approach for predicting the damage mechanism of CFRP composites at the micro-scale level, taking into account the curing residual stresses induced in the autoclave curing process. The study used finite element computation and a multi-scale modeling strategy to reveal the damage development and strength performance of CFRP composites at the micro-scale level.

Out-of-plane tensile failure behavior of fiber reinforced composites due to lay-up temperature induced intra-ply and inter-ply voids

Weizhu Zhou et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effect of voids on the damage mechanism of composite materials under out-of-plane tensile load with different lay-up temperature conditions. By establishing micro and macro models, experimental and numerical analyses show that increasing lay-up temperature leads to changes in the types and distribution of voids, resulting in a decrease in the out-of-plane tensile strength of the composite.
