Temperature effects on the behaviour of liquid-laminated embedded glass connections

Efstratios Volakos et al.

Summary: This study investigates the structural behavior of embedded load-bearing laminated glass connections at different temperatures through experiments and numerical simulations. The experimental results show that the response of the resin interlayer is dependent on time and temperature, significantly affecting the stiffness and strength of the connection. Temperature also determines the failure mechanism of the connection. A simplified analytical tool is developed to predict the load-displacement response of the embedded connection at different temperatures and load durations.

Experimental and Numerical Peeling Investigation on Aged Multi-Layer Anti-Shatter Safety Films (ASFs) for Structural Glass Retrofit

Silvana Mattei et al.

Summary: This paper focuses on the impact response of glass elements bonded with Polyethylene terephthalate (PET)-films and pressure sensitive adhesives (PSAs), and presents an experimental study and numerical analysis of the mechanical parameters of heat-applied films. The results indicate that the peel test outcomes are influenced by the rate dependence and aging dependence.

Considerations on efficient procedural steps for seismic capacity assessment and diagnostics of historic structural glass systems

Chiara Bedon et al.

Summary: Structural designers are supported by standards and guidelines to optimize the mechanical performance and safety of glass load-bearing elements and assemblies in buildings. Attention is given to deformation and stress check, post-breakage verification, and performance limits for extreme events. The paper also addresses the vulnerability and capacity of existing/historic glass components and systems, proposing procedural methodology steps and the use of non-destructive and numerical methods for diagnostic and characterization purposes.

Low-velocity single and repeated impact behavior of 3D printed honeycomb cellular panels

Gizem Acar Yavuz et al.

Summary: This study investigates the low velocity impact behaviors of 3D printed curved honeycomb cellular panels used for impact protection. The energy absorbing capacity of the panels is predicted through evaluating the results. Furthermore, the changes in the fundamental free vibration frequencies of the panels after impact are examined to determine the presence of damage. The effect of curvature on the damage mechanisms of 3D printed honeycomb panels is studied through contact force-deformation curves, energy profile diagrams, and SEM images, with the experimental results showing that the radius of curvature greatly affects the impact and free vibration behavior.

A durable coating to prevent stress corrosion effects on the surface strength of annealed glass

Gregorio Mariggio et al.

Summary: The study examines the durability of an innovative polymeric coating developed by the authors to prevent stress corrosion in annealed glass. Results show that the proposed formulation is almost insensitive to cyclic loading, maintains good performance in case of natural weathering, and is slightly more sensitive to artificial weathering.

Summary: This research study presents an experimental program to obtain key input mechanical parameters required for the numerical analysis of glass elements protected by multilayer antishatter safety films (ASFs). In addition, small-scale peel and tensile tests on ASF samples, as well as Operational Modal Analysis (OMA) techniques on ASF-bonded glass elements, were conducted.

Structural performance of a novel liquid-laminated embedded connection for glass

Efstratios Volakos et al.

Summary: A new type of adhesive connection for glass applications, involving embedded laminated glass connections, has been proposed and examined in this study. The mechanical response of this connection was assessed through numerical analyses and physical tests, revealing significant effects of the displacement rate on the connection's performance. Numerical analysis in Abaqus showed that the complex stress state near the connection is a result of two load-transfer mechanisms.
