Microstructural Understanding of Hydroxyapatite Addition on Age Hardening, Internal Friction, and Mechanical and Electrochemical Response of Resorbable Magnesium Alloys with Good Cytocompatibility

Kaushik Pal et al.

Summary: The present work aimed to assess the age hardening of microalloyed Mg-Zn-Mn alloy reinforced with hydroxyapatite particles for their suitability toward resorbable fixation devices. The peak-aged ZM31 sample showed the highest ultimate strength, and the aging treatment resulted in notable improvement in ductility and yield strength. However, the hemocompatibility and biodegradation of the samples need further consideration.

In vitro and in vivo assessment of the effect of biodegradable magnesium alloys on osteogenesis

Ding Li et al.

Summary: This study systematically evaluated the degradation behavior, biocompatibility, and osteogenic effect of pure Mg, Mg-3Zn, and Mg-2Zn-1Mn alloys in both in vitro and in vivo conditions. Mg-2Zn-1Mn exhibited higher corrosion resistance and more stable degradation behavior compared to pure Mg and Mg-3Zn. The extracts of the three materials showed a significant stimulating effect on osteogenic differentiation of rat bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs) along with non-cytotoxicity.

Tension-compression asymmetry in hot-rolled Mg-3wt%Gd alloy under creep loading

Jiaxiang Li et al.

Summary: The results of the study demonstrated a clear tension-compression asymmetry in the creep behavior of the alloy under tensile and compressive creep loading along the rolling direction and the normal direction. Twinning played a role in deteriorating the creep resistance of certain samples and causing asymmetrical behavior in the results. The T-RD sample showed the best creep resistance, while the C-ND sample followed, with the C-RD and T-ND samples showing similarly poor creep resistance.

Vivek Verma et al.

Summary: The bidirectional stiffness grading of orthopaedic plates has been studied for internal fixation of transverse fractures in the tibia bone. The study evaluated the mechanical properties of highly porous cellular materials and investigated the effects of functional grading on mechanical stimulation. The results showed that a functionally designed plate can significantly enhance bone formation and remodeling by encouraging regular walking and exercise.
