An experimental study on ballistic impact response of jute reinforced polyethylene glycol and nano silica based shear thickening fluid composite

Vishwas Mahesh et al.

Summary: The present study aims to assess the ballistic impact behavior of jute reinforced polyethylene glycol (PEG) and nano silica-based shear thickening fluid (STF). It is found that the shear thickening effect is more prominent at higher loading of nano silica particles, and the ballistic performance of the proposed composites is enhanced with increased loading of nano silica particles. According to the comparison of energy absorption capabilities, the proposed composite with 40% nano silica loading outperforms the neat fabric.

Meso-scale Numerical Modeling of Uni-directional Composite Panel Under Ballistic Impact

Yanfei Yang et al.

Summary: A simplified Finite Element model of UHMWPE fiber-reinforced composite panel was developed to capture detailed ballistic responses of fibers and matrix. By simulating laminate structure and reducing calculation cost, different ballistic responses of fibers and matrix in varied regions of the panel can be identified, which is beneficial for optimizing the structure of UHMWPE hard panel to improve ballistic performance and lightweight.

Intralayer interfacial sliding effect on the anti-impact performance of STF/Kevlar composite fabric

Junshuo Zhang et al.

Summary: This study found that impact speed and constraint conditions affect the relative intralayer interfacial sliding rate among yarns, thereby influencing the rheological state of STF and the anti-impact performance of fabric. Furthermore, a mathematical model was developed for the relationship between projectile velocity and fabric kinetic energy under strong constraints, providing design ideas for body armor with high protective performance.
