A unified trans-scale mechanical properties prediction method of 3D composites with void defects

Hao Huang et al.

Summary: A unified trans-scale method is developed to predict the mechanical properties of 3D composites with void defects by integrating experiments, analytical model, and finite element model. The proposed method is verified through trans-scale experiments and shows high agreement with the finite element model. The results indicate that void defects have different effects on the elastic modulus depending on the fiber tows or 3D orthogonal structures.

Binwen Wang et al.

Summary: With the advancement of composite processing technology, three-dimensional braided composites have become widely used in various high-tech industries due to their excellent mechanical properties. Accurately estimating the effective mechanical properties of braided performs is crucial for optimizing their performance. Using a multiphase finite element method within an asymptotic expansion homogenization framework allows successful prediction of the mechanical properties of three-dimensional braided composites, showing good agreement with experimental results.

Parametric analyses on multiscale elastic behavior of 3D braided composites with pore defects

Lei Ge et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the effects of manufacturing-induced pore defects on the mechanical behavior of 3D braided composites and establishes two different multiscale modeling methods. The parametric analyses reveal the decisive influence of void content on the elastic properties, while the effects of fiber distribution on the elastic behavior of yarns are limited.

Out-of-plane tensile failure behavior of fiber reinforced composites due to lay-up temperature induced intra-ply and inter-ply voids

Weizhu Zhou et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effect of voids on the damage mechanism of composite materials under out-of-plane tensile load with different lay-up temperature conditions. By establishing micro and macro models, experimental and numerical analyses show that increasing lay-up temperature leads to changes in the types and distribution of voids, resulting in a decrease in the out-of-plane tensile strength of the composite.
