Rift Valley fever, Mauritania, 2020: Lessons from a one health approach

Summary: A new outbreak of Rift Valley fever occurred in Mauritania from September to November 2020, with 78 reported human cases and 186 reported animal cases. The outbreak affected 11 out of the 13 regions of the country, with the highest number of cases in Tagant, Assaba, and Brakna regions. Camels were the most affected animal species, followed by small ruminants. Phylogenetic analysis showed close proximity between the viral strains from Mauritania 2020 and the strains from Mauritania 2015/Niger 2016, indicating a re-emergence of the RVF virus in the country.

Sero-surveillance of emerging viral diseases in camels and cattle in Nouakchott, Mauritania: an abattoir study
