Chemically induced models of Parkinson's disease

Thilaga Thirugnanam et al.

Summary: Environmental toxins can be harmful to humans, causing neurodegenerative disorders. Certain neurotoxins, when present in optimal concentrations, can mimic the clinical features of neurodegenerative diseases in animal models, aiding in understanding the molecular mechanisms of neurodegeneration.

Cholinergic system changes in Parkinson's disease: emerging therapeutic approaches

Nicolaas I. Bohnen et al.

Summary: In patients with Parkinson's disease, heterogeneous cholinergic system changes can occur in different brain regions, affecting various clinical features and neural circuitries. Cholinergic deficits within cognition network hubs are better predictors of cognitive deficits. The topographies of cholinergic changes overlap with neural circuitries involved in sleep, cognition, motor function, sensory perception, and autonomic functions.

Altered Cholinergic Innervation in De Novo Parkinson's Disease with and without Cognitive Impairment

Sygrid van der Zee et al.

Summary: This study assessed the cholinergic innervation status in early-stage Parkinson's disease (PD) patients and found that cholinergic innervation changes were associated with cognitive impairment. Regardless of cognitive status, patients showed cholinergic denervation in the posterior cortical regions. Cognitively intact patients exhibited higher cholinergic activity in the cerebellar, frontal, and subcortical regions, suggesting compensatory cholinergic upregulation in early-stage PD. Limited or failing cholinergic upregulation may play an important role in early cognitive impairment in PD.

Chapter 5-Parkinson's disease - A role of non-enzymatic posttranslational modifications in disease onset and progression?

Sebastian Schmidt et al.

Summary: Parkinson's disease is a complex neurodegenerative disorder with various causes. Non-enzymatic posttranslational modifications of proteins play a significant role in the pathoetiology of the disease, but our understanding is still limited. Investigating the impact of environmental proteome on Parkinson's disease is crucial for developing new diagnostic and therapeutic approaches.

Neuroprotective effects of Ginkgo biloba dropping pills in Parkinson's disease

Dingyi Yu et al.

Summary: Parkinson's disease (PD) lacks effective and safe treatments, but Ginkgo biloba dropping pill (GBDP) shows potential as an alternative therapy with its antioxidant and neuroprotective effects. GBDP demonstrated higher levels of certain compounds compared to the G. biloba extract EGb 761, and showed greater neuroprotective effects in in vitro and in vivo PD models. The Akt/GSK3 beta pathway may be involved in the neuroprotective effects of GBDP.

24-Epibrassinolide modulates the neurodevelopmental outcomes of high caffeine exposure in zebrafish (Danio rerio) embryos

Luis Felix et al.

Summary: The study found that 24-epibrassinolide (24-EPI) can mitigate the teratogenic effects of caffeine during early zebrafish development, particularly reducing tail curvature. However, caffeine exposure resulted in locomotor deficits and disrupted anxiety responses. Coexposure to caffeine and the highest 24-EPI concentrations showed less pronounced behavioral deficits.

Summary: Oxidopamine is a commonly used toxin for creating experimental animal models of diseases like Parkinson's, and it may generate toxicity by producing reactive oxygen species, leading to cell death and affecting cell structure. Researchers are exploring the therapeutic effects of antioxidant-based compounds related to oxidopamine-induced oxidative damage in various diseases.

Summary: Parkinson's disease is the second most prevalent neurodegenerative disorder in the elderly, with unclear etiology and no disease-modifying medicines available. The use of MPTP is fundamental in most animal models of PD, and zebrafish is emerging as a promising model for studying PD due to its unique properties.

Therapeutic Potential of Natural Products in Treating Neurodegenerative Disorders and Their Future Prospects and Challenges

Md. Habibur Rahman et al.

Summary: Natural products and their bioactive compounds derived from plants have shown therapeutic potential in treating neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's, Huntington's, and Parkinson's. However, challenges remain in clinical application due to lack of scientific support and concerns about effectiveness and patient safety. Targeting multi-mechanisms of action for neuroprotection is crucial in the treatment of NDs, with natural products emerging as potential agents for this purpose.

Effects of Holding Density on the Welfare of Zebrafish: A Systematic Review

Marica Andersson et al.

Summary: The welfare of zebrafish is influenced by various environmental factors, including food access, water quality, and holding density. Despite the widespread use of zebrafish in research, the impact of holding density on its welfare remains poorly understood. Future recommendations on holding density may vary depending on the specific welfare aspects being considered, indicating a need for further research on the interactive effects of density on welfare indicators.
