Topological data analysis of noise: Uniform unimodal distributions

Victor E. Gluzberg et al.

Summary: This article focuses on the random point clouds and their simplicial complexes via homology. The expected topological summaries of the complexes are derived in terms of average Betti numbers (ABN) and average integral persistence landscape (AIPL). Analytical expressions are obtained for the density of ABN and AIPL 1-norms in a homogeneous Poisson point process (HPPP) model. The article also discusses the decline and growth of the 1-norm of the average persistence landscape (APL) in different scenarios.

Machine learning methods for nonlinear dimensionality reduction of the thermospheric density field

Vahid Nateghi et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the compression step of thermospheric density field and evaluates order reduction methodologies such as autoencoders, linear, and nonlinear Principal Component Analysis. The results show that Kernel-based PCA performs better than Neural Networks in terms of accuracy, computational time, and energy consumption.

The 2020 global stock market crash: Endogenous or exogenous?

Ruiqiang Song et al.

Summary: The 2020 global stock market crash was mainly internal, with endogenous crashes occurring in several major stock market indexes. External shocks like the COVID-19 pandemic, corporate debt bubble, and oil price war played a minor role. The study emphasizes the importance of monitoring external factors influencing regime changes in stock markets and being cautious of potential risks in not only the stock market, but also other financial markets and economic indexes.

Topological features of multivariate distributions: Dependency on the covariance matrix

Lloyd L. Aromi et al.

Summary: Topological data analysis shows the dependency of mean values of functional p-norms on a uniform scaling of underlying multivariate distribution, and the decrease in average values of p-norms with increasing covariance in a system. The experimental results illustrate the complex dependency of topological features on changes in variance-covariance matrix.

Methods for forecasting the effect of exogenous risks on stock markets

Karina Arias-Calluari et al.

Summary: Markets are exposed to both internal and external risks, with the COVID-19 outbreak causing global market disruptions. Analysis of its impact on the S&P500 index is presented, along with a forecast model based on breaking news and publicly available information. The forecast predicts a bottoming out of the index before a future rebound.

Financial ratios and stock returns reappraised through a topological data analysis lens

P. Dlotko et al.

Summary: This study reexamines the relationship between financial ratios and stock returns using topological data analysis, revealing previously unseen non-monotonic relationships in multiple dimensions and visualizing the importance of machine learning in fitting stock returns. The initial application of TDABM for cross-sectional segmentation identifies significant abnormal returns, demonstrating the value of this approach for financial researchers and practitioners.

Time-resolved topological data analysis of market instabilities

Yuri A. Katz et al.

Summary: The study applied a novel econometric method to detect approaching market instabilities in multiple sectors of North American economy, using topological data analysis. It explored the impact of hyperparameters of the method, specifically the size of a rolling window and the dimensionality of the Takens' embedding, on transient loops detected in the topological space associated with financial time series.

HePPCAT: Probabilistic PCA for Data With Heteroscedastic Noise

David Hong et al.

Summary: This paper introduces a new variant of probabilistic PCA, HePPCAT, which is able to better handle the common issue of heterogeneous data in modern applications. By incorporating heteroscedasticity into the statistical model and using efficient alternating maximization algorithms, this method achieves superior performance compared to traditional PCA methods.
