Progress towards machine learning reaction rate constants

Evan Komp et al.

Summary: Machine learning algorithms can accelerate the calculation of reaction rate constants by predicting them using low cost input features, overcoming the infeasibility caused by the curse of dimensionality. The research discusses various kinetic datasets, input feature representations, and the use and design of machine learning algorithms for predicting reaction rate constants. Areas for further exploration to improve and evaluate the use of machine learning algorithms for chemical reaction rate constants are also identified.

A quantitative structure activity relationship (QSAR) model for predicting the rate constant of the reaction between VOCs and NO3 radicals

Yawei Liu et al.

Summary: A QSAR model was established to predict the rate constant (kNO3) for the chemical degradation of VOCs using the kNO3 of 189 VOCs and quantum chemical parameters. The model revealed that EHOMO and f(-)x were the key intrinsic factors determining kNO3, while EGAP, f(0)n, and BOx also significantly affected kNO3.

Machine Learning Quantitative Structure-Property Relationships as a Function of Ionic Liquid Cations for the Gas-Ionic Liquid Partition Coefficient of Hydrocarbons

Karl Marti Toots et al.

Summary: Ionic liquids (ILs) are unique solvents and electrolytes, and computational data-driven methods are used to understand their molecular properties and develop structure-property relationship models. This study focuses on the molecular interactions in ILs based on cationic structures and their impact on partitioning properties. The models developed in this study demonstrate high accuracy in predicting gas-IL partition coefficients for various cation families with different characteristics.

Prediction and evaluation of plasma arc reforming of naphthalene using a hybrid machine learning model

Yaolin Wang et al.

Summary: A hybrid machine learning model has been developed for predicting and optimizing a gliding arc plasma tar reforming process using naphthalene as a model tar compound. The model, which combines three algorithms, shows good agreement between experimental data and predicted results. Optimization of hyper-parameters using genetic algorithm reveals the critical parameters for conversion and energy efficiency, leading to identification of optimal processing parameters for achieving maximum tar conversion, carbon balance, and energy efficiency.

Ab initio-based kinetics of hydrogen atom abstraction from methyl propionate by H and CH3 radicals: a biodiesel model

Jamelah S. Al-Otaibi et al.

Summary: The kinetics of hydrogen atom abstraction from methyl propionate by H-center dot and (CH3)-C-center dot radicals were studied using density functional theory and ab initio calculations. The results showed that abstraction of H atom from C-alpha is the dominant route for MePr fuel consumption, while the rate constants of H-atom abstraction from the terminal methyl groups increase with rising temperature for both radicals.

Unraveling the low-temperature oxidation mechanism between methyl crotonate radicals and O2

Shanshan Ruan et al.

Summary: Quantum chemical methods were used to study the chemical reaction kinetics of methyl crotonate (MC, C5H8O2) radicals with O-2 at low temperatures, showing the crucial effect of conjugation on the reaction process. Initial adduct formation and intramolecular H-transfer reactions play key roles in low temperature oxidation, and the mechanism of O-2 addition to MC radicals was verified by a previous combustion model. The updated model successfully replicated previous experimental results.

Unextractable fossil fuels in a 1.5 °C world

Dan Welsby et al.

Summary: Parties to the 2015 Paris Agreement have pledged to limit global warming to below 2 degrees Celsius, but a sharp decline in fossil fuel use is required to keep the temperature increase below 1.5 degrees Celsius. A global energy systems model shows that by 2050, 60% of oil and fossil methane gas, and 90% of coal must remain unextracted to stay within a 1.5 degrees Celsius carbon budget.
