Coupled droplet dynamics: Investigation of acoustic-spray interactions in a reacting flow field

Yogesh Aradhey et al.

Summary: This investigation explores the coupling between a spray and a thermoacoustic instability using droplet data from a combustion instability. The commonly accepted ensemble averaging techniques are found to be inadequate, and a new approach based on droplet surface area is used instead. The study extends the understanding of nonreacting acoustic-spray interactions and considers them in a fully self-excited instability.

Droplet cluster evolution and collective gasification of droplet groups in a fuel spray: A comparative study under non and conditions

Manikandan Balasubramaniyan et al.

Summary: The aim of this study is to investigate the impact of spray combustion on the evolution of droplet clusters and the collective gasification processes of droplet groups. Experiments were conducted on an acetone spray using a pressure swirl injector under both non-reacting and reacting conditions. PIV technique was employed to capture Mie-scattering images of the spray and measure droplet velocity, while droplet sizing was achieved using the ILIDS technique. Voronoi analysis of the PIV images allowed for the identification and measurement of droplet clusters. The study found that both the size distribution of droplet clusters and the evaporation/combustion behavior of the clusters varied significantly in the presence of spray combustion compared to the non-reacting condition.

Graphene oxide doped ethanol droplet combustion: Ignition delay and contribution of atomization to burning rate

Sepehr Mosadegh et al.

Summary: The effects of graphene oxide nanomaterials addition and oxidation level on ignition delay and burning rate of ethanol droplets were investigated experimentally. The results showed that increasing the loading concentration generally increased the ignition delay, except for ethanol doped with highly oxidized graphene. It was also found that atomization may occur for the doped ethanol droplets.

Competing Contributions of Structural, Acoustic, and Intrinsic Modes to Thermoacoustic Oscillations

Ramin Heydarlaki et al.

Summary: This study experimentally investigated the structural, acoustic, and intrinsic modes contributions to thermoacoustic oscillations in a small-scale power generator combustor. The results showed that turbulent methane-air premixed flames can be stabilized in different ways, and acoustic and structural modes contribute mostly to positive Rayleigh gain values, while intrinsic modes contribute to negative values. The presence of intrinsic thermoacoustic modes is desired in the utilized power generator combustor compared to structural and acoustic modes.

Turbulent spray flames of kerosene issuing from a hybrid electrohydrodynamic-air-blast atomiser

Tushar Ahmed et al.

Summary: This paper presents an experimental study on the turbulent spray flames of atomized kerosene using a new hybrid air-blast/electrohydrodynamic atomizer. The study focuses on the influence of electric charge on the stability, flow field, and reaction zone structure of the spray flames. Experimental results show a notable increase in particle concentration with the application of charge, while the velocity fields remain largely unchanged. Laser-induced fluorescence experiments also indicate a clear influence of charge on the reaction zone structures.

Analysis of flame propagation mechanisms during light-round in an annular spray flame combustor: the impact of wall heat transfer and two-phase flow

Karl Topperwien et al.

Summary: This study investigates the ignition process in annular multi-burner combustors using large-eddy simulations, and reveals that the volumetric expansion of burnt gases is the main driving mechanism of flame propagation. Droplet accumulations in the wake of swirling jets lead to a characteristic sawtooth propagation mode. Additionally, the cooling effect of the combustor walls diminishes the flame propagation speed. This research has significant implications for understanding the mechanisms of flame propagation.

The role of atomization in the coupling between doped droplets dynamics and their flames

Sepehr Mosadegh et al.

Summary: The droplet and flame chemiluminescence dynamics and their coupling during atomization events of graphene oxide doped diesel are experimentally investigated. The results show that both the droplet diameter and flame chemiluminescence exhibit intermittent oscillations. The root mean square of the droplet diameter oscillations is positively related to the number and intensity of the atomization events and the graphene oxide doping concentration.

Combustion Characteristics of Suspended Hydrocarbon Fuel Droplets with Various Nanoenergetic Additives

John W. Bennewitz et al.

Summary: Experimental investigation on the burning process of liquid fuels with nanoenergetic additives reveals that the additives mainly contribute to particle burning towards the end of droplet lifetime, resulting in increased instantaneous burning rate. Most additives do not significantly impact the steady burning rate and ignition delay, but nanofuel combinations of ethanol with ammonia borane and RP-2 with graphene show significant qualitative changes in combustion behavior.

Atomization behaviour of a hybrid air-blast-electrostatic atomizer for spray combustion

Tushar Ahmed et al.

Summary: An analysis of the atomization region of diesel sprays generated from a hybrid atomizer showed that charge has an influence on droplet and ligament size and number, with an increase in spray specific charge resulting in smaller droplets and ligaments but a higher droplet count. The influence of charge varies with aerodynamic Weber number, with a more significant impact observed at lower Weber numbers. In hybrid mode, a minimum spray specific charge is required for the electric potential to affect the aerodynamically assisted spray.
