In vitro and in vivo assessment of decellularized platelet-rich fibrin-loaded strontium doped porous magnesium phosphate scaffolds in bone regeneration

Chaudhuri Mohammad Tarif et al.

Summary: The effect of decellularized platelet-rich fibrin (dPRF) loaded strontium (Sr) doped porous magnesium phosphate (MgP) bioceramics on biocompatibility, biodegradability, and bone regeneration was investigated. Sustained release of growth factors from dPRF was achieved, and the presence of dPRF on the scaffold surface was confirmed even after 7 days of degradation. In vivo experiments in rabbit femoral bone defect demonstrated improved bone rejuvenation with the use of dPRF-incorporated MgP scaffolds. Micro-CT examination showed higher bone invasion in the pores of the MgP2Sr-dPRF samples compared to MgP2Sr, indicating better bone maturation capability. Oxytetracycline labeling also revealed higher new osseous tissue regeneration in MgP2Sr-dPRF samples compared to pure MgP2Sr samples after 3 months of implantation. Histological analysis and radiological studies confirmed the presence of abundant osteoblastic and osteoclastic cells and significant bridging callus formation in the MgP2Sr-dPRF group. Overall, dPRF-loaded Sr-doped magnesium phosphate bioceramics exhibited good biocompatibility and bone-forming ability in bone regeneration.

Fabrication of doped ?-tricalcium phosphate bioceramics by Direct Ink Writing for bone repair applications

Nicolas Somers et al.

Summary: Beta-tricalcium phosphate (beta-TCP) is a promising biomaterial for bone regeneration. In this study, macroporous scaffolds were printed using co-doped beta-TCP powders and the Direct Ink Writing process. The co-doped samples exhibited higher thermal stability, densification, and mechanical properties compared to undoped beta-TCP. The printed scaffolds showed reduced macropores and microcracks, improved compressive strengths and densities, and significantly higher values compared to literature data.

3D porous HA/TCP composite scaffolds for bone tissue engineering

Meysam Mohammadi Zerankeshi et al.

Summary: Calcium phosphates (apatites) are research frontiers for bone regeneration due to their similarity to the mineral constituent of bone, biocompatibility, and osteogenesis ability. However, the biodegradability and mechanical properties of monophasic apatites need improvement. 3D porous HA/TCP composite scaffolds prepared using conventional and 3D printing techniques show promise for overcoming these limitations.

Changgui Huang et al.

Summary: In this study, composite bioceramics containing strontium-containing phosphate glass (SrP) were fabricated to improve the mechanical strength of strontium carbonate (SrC) bioceramics. The addition of 10 wt% SrP promoted densification, enhanced compressive strength, and facilitated apatite precipitation and sustained ion release. The SrC-SrP bioceramics showed better proliferation and osteogenesis effects on bone cells compared to traditional bioceramics.
