Graphene oxide nanofiltration membranes with confined Na+ in two-dimensional nanochannels

Guoke Zhao et al.

Summary: The interactions between metal cations and graphene derivatives significantly impact the properties and structures of graphene-based devices. Metal cations are commonly present in feeding solutions under pressure-driven separation conditions, acting as target solutes and modifiers of the structure and transmembrane resistance of graphene oxide (GO) membranes. The presence of hydrated Na+ expands the nanochannels in GO membranes, facilitating water molecule passage, while hydrated Mg2+ accumulates at the edges of GO sheets, reducing the cross-sectional area and transport pathways, increasing water molecule transmembrane resistance.

Graphene oxide nanofiltration membrane for efficient dyes separation by hexagonal boron nitride nanosheets intercalation and polyethyleneimine surface modification

Jing Yu et al.

Summary: In this study, a facile and effective method was developed to improve the permeability and stability of laminar graphene oxide (GO)-based membranes for water treatment. By intercalating hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) nanosheets between GO laminates and modifying the membrane surface with polyethyleneimine (PEI), highly stable GO nanofiltration membranes were fabricated, which exhibited excellent separation performance and ultrafast water permeability. The composite membrane showed a hydrophilic-hydrophobic ideal transport path, allowing water molecules to rapidly flow through the hydrophobic nanochannels constructed by h-BN.

Graphene oxide nanofiltration membranes with confined Na plus in two-dimensional nanochannels

Guoke Zhao et al.

Summary: The interactions between metal cations and graphene derivatives can significantly alter the properties and structures of graphene-based devices, affecting their performance. Metal cations are commonly present in feeding solutions under pressure-driven separation conditions and can act as both target solutes and modifiers for graphene oxide (GO) membranes. This study reveals the influence of hydrated Na+/Mg2+ on the two-dimensional nanochannels of GO membranes under pressure-driven conditions. Hydrated Na+ expands the nanochannels, facilitating water molecules' passage, while hydrated Mg2+ reduces both the cross-sectional area and the number of transport pathways, increasing the transmembrane resistance of water molecules.

The role of ring opening reaction chemistry of sultones/lactones in the direct zwitterionization of polyamide nano-filtration membranes

Bairui Zhou et al.

Summary: A facile one-step strategy was developed to zwitterionize polyamide based thin-film composite nanofiltration membranes through in-situ ring-opening reactions with cyclic chemical reagents. The impact of ring strain on loading density of zwitterionic chains and the chemistry effect on membrane properties were investigated. Membranes with medium length sulfonic acid chains showed increased hydrophilicity and water permeability, while short carboxylate chains enhanced retention selectivity. Competing factors influenced water permeability and retention selectivity of the membranes modified by different cyclic chemical reagents.

Nanosheet-templated graphene oxide membranes for fast molecule separation

Zhen Lin et al.

Summary: This work demonstrates a versatile strategy to create nanosheet-templated water channels in laminar graphene oxide membranes with controllable interlayer spacing. The resulting membranes have higher water permeance and good molecule separation properties compared to unintercalated membranes. This intercalation and sacrificing nanosheets strategy has higher potential in controlling d-spacing of laminar membranes than traditional intercalation.
