A win-win scenario for antibacterial activity and skin mildness of cationic surfactants based on the modulation of host-guest supramolecular conformation

Xuejiao Wang et al.

Summary: In this study, the regulatory mechanism of 8-cyclodextrin (8-CD) on the bactericidal performance and skin irritation of commercial cationic surfactants (CSAa) with different properties was investigated. It was found that when the ratio of 8-CD was not greater than 1:1, the bactericidal efficiency of CSAa@8-CD (n > 12) remained high. However, when the ratio of 8-CD exceeded 1:1, the antibacterial performance decreased due to the interaction between 8-CD and bacteria.

Inclusion complexation of surfactant with fi-cyclodextrin and its effect on the mixed micellization of cationic/anionic surfactants

Li-Sheng Hao et al.

Summary: The inclusion complexation of surfactant with fi-cyclodextrin (fi-CD) is a research topic in supramolecular chemistry. Thermodynamic and molecular dynamics (MD) simulation studies provide valuable information about the synergism between cationic and anionic surfactants and the competition between inclusion complexation and mixed micellization. Experimental and simulation results indicate a stronger inclusion affinity of fi-CD with CTAB compared to SL, and a less competitive interaction between inclusion and mixed micellization when the composition approaches the equimolar ratio of CTAB and SL.

Construction of photoresponsive azobenzene-decorated cationic surfactant-based self-assembled vesicles and controlled drug release

Nini Li et al.

Summary: Surfactant aggregates with unique space partitioning ability are widely used as drug carriers. In this study, the surface activity and photoisomerization behavior of a synthetically prepared azobenzene-functionalized cationic surfactant were thoroughly investigated. The self-assembling tendency of the surfactant with cyclodextrin was monitored, and the system was found to exhibit fast photo-responsive behavior and reversible photo-response. This self-assembled system may be used for the controlled release of drugs and could be a promising drug carrier.

Photoresponsive supramolecular strategy for controlled assembly in light-inert double-chain surfactant system

Xuejiao Wang et al.

Summary: The main advance in double-chain surfactant systems lies in their application in medicine and material science, particularly in drug delivery systems. Researchers have discovered that reversible assembly and disassembly of complex double-chain surfactants can be achieved using a photo-responsive supramolecular strategy. This new perspective paves the way for the development of novel light-responsive assembly materials in aqueous media and biological field.

Not by Serendipity: Rationally Designed Reversible Temperature-Responsive Circularly Polarized Luminescence Inversion by Coupling Two Scenarios of Harata-Kodaka's Rule

Xuejiao Wang et al.

Summary: Researchers successfully achieved reversible handedness inversion of CPL by coupling two scenarios of Harata-Kodaka's rule on a crystalline microtube platform. The process involves coassembling a linear dye with β-CyD, resulting in the generation of reversible left- and right-handed CPL under different conditions.
