BIOSORPTION OF Cu(II) IONS ON ALGAE BIOMASS AND DERIVED BIOCHAR

Alina-Alexandra Ciobanu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the removal of Cu(II) ions from aqueous solution using Ulva lactuca sp. algae biomass and biochar obtained from the algae biomass at 550 degrees C (BC-550). The results showed that both biosorbents had the ability to remove Cu(II) ions, with biochar exhibiting a higher biosorption capacity. Mathematical models were used to quantitatively evaluate the retention efficiency of Cu(II) ions, confirming the potential applications of these materials in metal ion removal processes.

Remediation of heavy metal polluted waters using activated carbon from lignocellulosic biomass: An update of recent trends

Anh Tuan Hoang et al.

Summary: This review provides an update on utilizing biomass waste-derived activated carbon for adsorbing common pollutants like Cr, Pb, Cu, Cd, Hg, and As, with a focus on different mechanisms of heavy metal adsorption and key parameters affecting adsorption performance. The use of microwave technique for activation is gaining popularity due to its ability to ensure uniform energy distribution and enhance surface area, although chemical activation remains preferred for its ease of operation, lower cost, and shorter preparation time.

Determination of Organic Compounds, Fulvic Acid, Humic Acid, and Humin in Peat and Sapropel Alkaline Extracts

Laurynas Jarukas et al.

Summary: The study analyzed the organic and humic substances from different sources of peat and sapropel, revealing their potential applications in various fields. Comparing extraction methods, it was found that active maceration was more efficient than ultrasound extraction. The highest amounts of fulvic acid and humic acid and humin were determined in pure brown peat samples.
