Experiments and modeling of CO2 solubility in water-based and oil-based drilling fluids

Xiaohui Sun et al.

Summary: Experimental studies have shown that electrolytes and salt ion concentration can significantly reduce the solubility of CO2 in water. Different polymers have similar effects in decreasing the gas solubility. In addition, CO2 solubility in oil-based drilling fluids is significantly larger than in water-based drilling fluids.

Improved curing performances of epoxy resin by a structure-controllable self-emulsifying curing agent

Long He et al.

Summary: The study focuses on enhancing the emulsifying performance of curing agent in waterborne epoxy resin system by synthesizing a structure-controllable self-emulsifying epoxy curing agent. This improvement leads to better mechanical properties of the cured film, indicating great potential for applications in architectural and industrial coatings.

Towards improved monitoring of offshore carbon storage: A real-world field experiment detecting a controlled sub-seafloor CO2 release

Anita Flohr et al.

Summary: Carbon capture and storage (CCS) is a key technology for reducing CO2 emissions in industrial processes, and robust strategies for CO2 leakage detection, quantification, and management are crucial for safe geological CO2 storage. The STEMM-CCS project conducted a controlled CO2 release experiment in the North Sea to mimic unintended CO2 emissions from subsurface storage sites. Various techniques were used to detect, characterize, and quantify gaseous and dissolved CO2 in sediments and seawater.

Impact of CO2 leakage from sub-seabed carbon dioxide storage on sediment and porewater geochemistry

Anna Lichtschlag et al.

Summary: This study simulated low leakage rates of CO2 from a storage reservoir in the North Sea and found that carbonate and silicate minerals react quickly with CO2, releasing some of the CO2 and affecting the release of surrounding metals to a certain extent. However, the overall impact on the benthic environment was minimal, with no toxic metals released from the sediments. Porewater composition and temperature were effective indicators for detecting leakage, even at low CO2 leakage rates.

Numerical modelling of CO2 migration in heterogeneous sediments and leakage scenario for STEMM-CCS field experiments

Umer Saleem et al.

Summary: A two-phase flow model based on Navier-Stokes-Darcy equations is used to simulate and predict the dynamics of injected CO2 dispersion and dissolution through sediments into the water column at the Goldeneye STEMM-CCS field experiment. The model is validated by diagnostic simulations to compare with field observation data, revealing the dynamics of the CO2 plume development in the sediments.
