Thermally stable and salt-resistant synthetic polymers as drilling fluid additives for deployment in harsh sub-surface conditions: A review

Shadfar Davoodi et al.

Summary: Conventional drilling fluid technologies often fail to meet the requirements of modern drilling under harsh subsurface conditions. Research is being conducted to develop new materials, such as synthetic polymers, to improve drilling fluid performance. Although synthetic polymers have shown success in preventing lost circulation, challenges remain regarding their quality and sustainability in harsh environments.

Thixotropic and hydration effects of Mg/Al-layered double hydroxide and sodium montmorillonite composite dispersion on oil well cement paste

Pengpeng Li et al.

Summary: Thixotropic cement paste is an effective method for solving cementing issues in oil and gas wells, as it can recover its previous state after shear action. To overcome the limitations of clay thixotropic agents, a composite nanoclay thixotropic agent was developed, which enhances the properties of cement paste by forming a dynamic reversible house of card grid structure between cement and clay colloidal particles.

Insights into the high temperature-induced failure mechanism of bentonite in drilling fluid

Jingping Liu et al.

Summary: This study elucidated the high-temperature failure mechanism of clay in water-based drilling fluid through molecular dynamics simulation, multi-characterizations, and experiments. It was found that high temperature destroys the layered structure of clay, leading to reduced surface aluminum and hydroxyl species, which affects the electrical charge and hydrophilicity of clay and subsequently degrades the rheology and fluid loss performance of the drilling fluid.

Rheological behavior of oil well cement pastes containing various types of dispersants at different hydration temperatures

Yang Xu et al.

Summary: This research investigates the effects of different types of oil well dispersants and hydration temperatures on the rheological properties of cement pastes through rheometer testing. The study reveals that the dosage of dispersants impacts the yield stress, apparent viscosity, and hysteresis loop area, particularly at lower hydration temperatures. Cement paste with dispersants shows higher hardness and critical strain during SAOS test, while the storage modulus continuously increases with hydration time and temperature.
