Synthesis of mixed-mode based functionalized mesoporous silica through RAFT polymerization and its application for dye adsorption

Yao Fu et al.

Summary: In this study, functionalized mesoporous silica based on mixed-mode interactions were successfully prepared by reversible-addition fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization. The materials exhibited high adsorption capacity for ionic dyes with fast adsorption rate and superior reusability. The findings suggest that these materials have potential applications in the removal of dyes and heavy metal ions from wastewater due to their simple preparation, mixed-mode interactions, and high adsorption performance.

Preparation and performance study of superhydrophobic layer based on fluffy ZnO rods/PDMS

Zhi-Xian Yang et al.

Summary: In this study, a fluffy micro-nano structure model of Zinc oxide (ZnO) was designed to investigate its superhydrophobic properties. A simple method of superhydrophobic coatings preparation was proposed by controlling the ratio of ZnO to polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS). ZnO rods were grown on the substrate surface using the hydrothermal method, and the resulting coating showed excellent superhydrophobic properties after modification with 1H,1H,2H,2H-perfluorooctyltriethoxysilane. This study provides a great idea for future research on superhydrophobic coatings.

Amine and sulfonic acid functionalized mesoporous silica as an effective adsorbent for removal of methylene blue from contaminated water

Abeer Beagan et al.

Summary: The waste effluents of textiles and leather industries, which contain organic dyes as major contaminants, have been found to cause serious health problems. Adsorption techniques using mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) were investigated for the efficient removal of organic dyes from industrial wastewater. The MSNs were synthesized with selectively generated active inner/external surfaces by incorporating functional groups through co-condensation and post-grafting procedures. The study evaluated different grafting strategies and their effectiveness in removing cationic dye (methylene blue) from contaminated water samples. The results showed that nanomaterials containing sulfonic acid exhibited the highest adsorption performance, with an extraction efficiency of 98%. Increasing the salt concentration in the water samples improved the adsorption efficiency of all the nanomaterials.

Experimental and Molecular Dynamic Simulation of Droplet Deposition on Superhydrophobic Plant Leaf Surfaces

Chong Cao et al.

Summary: This study aimed at enhancing pesticide droplet deposition on superhydrophobic plant leaf surfaces. The system using a bio-based surfactant and glycerol through hydrogen bonding successfully inhibited droplet bouncing and splashing. The addition of glycerol did not affect the properties of the surfactant and allowed for rapid diffusion and adsorption on the leaf surfaces.
