Forming mechanism of coke microparticles from polymerization of aqueous organics during hydrothermal carbonization process of biomass

Ruikun Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the growth mechanism of coke microparticles and found that their formation during hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) had a significant impact on the yield and properties of hydrochar. The coke microparticles were observed to undergo two stages of micronuclei formation and growth, involving the polymerization of dissolved organics and the bonding of micronuclei with aqueous organic molecules.

Hydrothermal carbonization of rape straw: Effect of reaction parameters on hydrochar and migration of AAEMs

Chen Cheng et al.

Summary: Hydrothermal carbonization improves the biomass quality and energy yield of rape straw. The properties of hydrochars produced at different temperatures and residence times were investigated. The results showed that increasing temperature had a more significant effect on hydrochar properties than residence time. The hydrochar structure was changed and became more stable after the aromatization reaction. The gasification reactivity of hydrochar was also affected, with the peak of pyrolysis and gasification shifting to a higher temperature region. Furthermore, hydrothermal carbonization efficiently reduced the content of alkali and alkaline earth metals, with the best removal condition observed at 200°C.

Pyrolysis of Biomass Wastes into Carbon Materials

Malgorzata Sieradzka et al.

Summary: This study investigates the production and potential applications of biochar in the biomass pyrolysis process. Three types of biomass waste, wheat straw, spent coffee grounds, and brewery grains, were studied. The carbon content in the biochars increased significantly, with the highest increase observed in spent coffee grounds. The structure and thermal properties of the biochars were characterized, and their adsorption properties were tested using chromium ion adsorption. It was found that the selected biochars can be applied as adsorbents or fuels, with different materials exhibiting different properties.
