Predicting pipeline corrosion in heterogeneous soils using numerical modelling and artificial neural networks

Rukshan Azoor et al.

Summary: The research examined the influence of soil heterogeneity on the corrosion of underground metallic pipelines and found that the degree of saturation and saturated soil resistivity are the most influential variables. An artificial neural network was trained and validated to predict corrosion rates based on these variables. The study revealed that the spatial variability of degree of saturation significantly affects the maximum corrosion patch size, depth, and frequency of occurrence.

Predicting axial load capacity of CFST columns using machine learning

Iman Faridmehr et al.

Summary: Concrete-filled steel tubular (CFST) columns are widely used in various structures due to their economic and structural advantages. This study collected experimental data on different types of CFST columns and compared them with design code calculations. The accuracy of design codes in predicting the axial capacity of CFST columns was found to be dependent on the slenderness ratio of the columns.

Artificial neural network optimization to predict saturated hydraulic conductivity in arid and semi-arid regions

Ammar Albalasmeh et al.

Summary: The generalized regression neural network (GRNN) can be used to predict the saturated hydraulic conductivity (K-sat) of soil, and soil texture and electrical conductivity can be used as the influential features in the prediction model. The GRNN model using a small dataset and limited features can provide reliable predictions of K-sat.

Effect of freeze-thaw cycles on the accumulative deformation of frozen clay under cyclic loading conditions: experimental evidence and theoretical model

Xiangtian Xu et al.

Summary: The study investigates the accumulative deformation behaviours of frozen clay under cyclic loading conditions, finding that the permanent strain is sensitive to the freeze-thaw process and changes with the number of cycles. The experimental results show that the normalised accumulative strain increases with the number of freeze-thaw cycles and stress amplitude, but decreases with increasing confining pressure.

Deterioration effect of freeze-thaw on mechanical properties of roadbed clay under unfavorable conditions

Yiqiang Sun et al.

Summary: Research on freeze-thaw and triaxial tests of roadbed clay revealed that failure strength and cohesion of freeze-thaw soil decrease considerably with dropped freezing temperature, increasing moisture content, and improved compaction degree. The change in friction angle was less remarkable and exhibited an opposite trend with freezing temperature and compaction degree. After the initial freeze-thaw cycles, there was a reduction in failure strength and cohesion, followed by a plateau, while the friction angle initially decreased and then recovered to a value higher than unfrozen soil.
