Assessment of cardiovascular risk factors in patients with idiopathic inflammatory myopathies: a systematic review

Jucier Goncalves Junior et al.

Summary: We conducted a systematic review to examine the cardiovascular risk factors and outcomes in idiopathic inflammatory myopathies (IIMs), including acute coronary syndrome and stroke. Our review followed the PRISMA protocol and searched three electronic databases from January 1956 to December 2022. Twenty articles were included, showing that most patients with IIMs are middle-aged North American or Asian women with dyslipidemia and hypertension. While the prevalence of cardiovascular risk factors is generally low in IIMs, there is a high incidence of acute myocardial infarction. Further research is needed to determine the impact of different variables on cardiovascular risk in patients with IIMs.

An international audit of the management of dyslipidaemia and hypertension in patients with rheumatoid arthritis: results from 19 countries

Summary: The study revealed significant geographical differences in estimated cardiovascular disease risk and preventive treatment among rheumatoid arthritis patients. Low goal attainment for lipid-lowering treatment was observed, with only half of the patients reaching the blood pressure goal.

Validation of methods to identify people with idiopathic inflammatory myopathies using hospital episode statistics

Jennifer R. Hannah et al.

Summary: This study validates the accuracy of ICD-10 codes within HES for identifying cases of idiopathic inflammatory myopathies. The combination of these codes shows high positive predictive value and sensitivity. The developed algorithms can be applied across all NHS Trusts, enabling robust and cost-effective research on the epidemiology of IIM.
