Global burden of bacterial antimicrobial resistance in 2019: a systematic analysis

Christopher J. L. Murray et al.

Summary: Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) poses a significant threat to global human health, and this study provides the most comprehensive estimates of AMR burden to date. By estimating deaths and disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) associated with bacterial AMR in 204 countries and territories in 2019, the study highlights the impact of resistance and the leading pathogen-drug combinations contributing to it.

Keeping It Real: Antibiotic Use Problems and Stewardship Solutions in Low- and Middle-income Countries

Saurav Basu et al.

Summary: Antimicrobial resistance is a global health threat, and managing antibiotic use in LMIC is crucial. However, interventions in LMIC face limitations in resources, feasibility, and effectiveness. Gathering examples of antibiotic use problems and real-world solutions in LMIC can provide broader lessons for addressing antimicrobial resistance on a global scale.

Trends in fever case management for febrile inpatients in a low malaria incidence setting of Tanzania

Deng B. Madut et al.

Summary: In a low malaria transmission setting of northern Tanzania, significant declines were observed in malaria over-diagnosis and over-treatment among febrile inpatients after 2010. However, a proportion of smear-negative participants were still diagnosed and treated for malaria, highlighting the importance of continued monitoring of fever case management in different malaria epidemiological settings in sub-Saharan Africa.

Antimicrobial Resistance Situational Analysis 2019-2020: Design and Performance for Human Health Surveillance in Uganda

Ibrahimm Mugerwa et al.

Summary: Antibiotic resistance and its mechanisms have been known for over six decades, but global efforts to characterize its routine drivers have only gained momentum in the recent past. The emergence of resistance occurs naturally in the environment, but accelerated spread bears hallmarks of anthropomorphic influence. Uganda is making progress in developing and implementing a functional AMR surveillance strategy for human health.
