Summary: During the pandemic, there has been a surge in the number of platform trials compared to historical use. While transparency in statistical methods and clarity of data sharing policies needs improvement, platform trials appear particularly well-suited for rapid evidence generation. Trials secured funding quickly and many succeeded in adding new therapies in a short time period, thus demonstrating the potential for these trial designs to be implemented beyond the pandemic. The evidence gathered here may provide ample insight to further inform operational, statistical, and regulatory aspects of future platform trial conduct.

Summary: Traditional clinical trials often fail to recruit representative participant populations. Decentralized clinical trials (DCTs) have been proposed as a potential solution to reduce barriers and attract a wider range of participants, but their impact on participant inclusivity remains to be seen. Digital studies aiming to address a single element of inclusion may inadvertently lead to unintended consequences in other areas. Implementing DCTs presents new challenges such as the digital divide and the need to build new infrastructure.

Summary: The COVID pandemic has highlighted the importance of laboratory medicine and the critical shortage of trained laboratory personnel. The need for laboratory professionals is expected to grow by 11% by 2030. Proposed actions to address this issue include increasing awareness of the medical laboratory science profession and providing more training opportunities. Recent survey data shows that 80% of microbiology laboratories have vacant positions due to a lack of qualified applicants.
