Detectable Intensification of Hourly and Daily Scale Precipitation Extremes across Eastern China

Yang Chen et al.

Summary: Detecting long-term changes in precipitation extremes over monsoon regions is challenging due to observational uncertainty, internal variability, and climate models' deficiencies. This study in Eastern China shows that recent climate warming has intensified precipitation extremes, particularly non-tropical-cyclone-related events, suggesting anthropogenic influence.

Comparing the Influence of Global Warming and Urban Anthropogenic Heat on Extreme Precipitation in Urbanized Pearl River Delta Area Based on Dynamical Downscaling

Kwun Yip Fung et al.

Summary: The study compares the impacts of global warming and intense urban anthropogenic heat on extreme urban rainfall over the Pearl River Delta megacity. While the two forcings have similar impacts on rainfall intensity, they have distinct signatures in modulating the thermodynamic environment. Global warming warms up the entire troposphere, while intense urban heat is limited to the lowest 1 km above ground, leading to different mechanisms in exacerbating extreme urban rainfall.
