Intrinsic fluorescence of UV-irradiated DNA

Gregory T. Carroll et al.

Summary: In this study, it was found that both natural and synthetic DNA exhibit a fluorescent photoproduct upon UV irradiation. Calf thymus DNA and poly(dA).poly(dT) showed significant fluorescence after being exposed to UV light, while poly(dAdT)2 displayed fluorescence to a lesser degree. Poly(dGdC)2 did not exhibit fluorescence, but the UV-Vis data indicated photochemical changes. The results indicate that fluorescence occurs when thymine and adenine base pairs are present, and is enhanced when thymine nucleobases are adjacent to each other on the same strand.

Removal of SARS-CoV-2 bioaerosols using ultraviolet air filtration

Roy E. Barnewall et al.

Summary: Engineering controls are crucial in reducing the spread of SARS-CoV-2, with technologies like UV-C light and HEPA filtration being effective in removing the virus from the air. The study confirms the efficacy of an APS combining UV-C light and HEPA filtration in eliminating SARS-CoV-2 in a controlled environment.

Thymine dissociation and dimer formation: A Raman and synchronous fluorescence spectroscopic study

Anushka Nagpal et al.

Summary: The study investigated the effects of UV irradiation on thymine solutions using various spectroscopic methods, showing that thymine dimer formation and (6-4) photoproduct formation increase with radiation dose. Spectroscopic data revealed the mechanism of thymine dimer formation, which is known to inhibit DNA replication and cause bacterial inactivation.

Air Disinfection for Airborne Infection Control with a Focus on COVID-19: Why Germicidal UV is Essential†

Edward A. Nardell

Summary: Aerosol transmission is recognized as the main way COVID-19 spreads, highlighting the importance of ventilation. Mechanical ventilation in non-healthcare settings may not achieve recommended air changes per hour. Upper room germicidal UV air disinfection is a key technology for reducing COVID-19 transmission.
