Bubbles as a platform for investigating work function tunability of 2D materials under biaxial strains

Yuyang Long et al.

Summary: Strain engineering is commonly used to tune the band structure of two-dimensional materials, but achieving nonvolatile biaxial strain remains challenging. In this study, we demonstrated that bubbles formed during mechanical exfoliation can be used as a platform to investigate the work function tunability of 2D materials under biaxial strains. We revealed in situ the equi-biaxial tensile strain at the bubble vertex, which varies with bubble sizes, and found that the local work function of ReS2 increases with biaxial tensile strain.

Tunable Band Gap and Raman Shifts of Two-Dimensional ReX2 (X=S, Se): Layer and Temperature Effect

Liang Ma et al.

Summary: This study proposes a theoretical model to investigate the effects of layer numbers and temperature on the band gap and Raman shifts of ReX2 from an atomistic perspective. The results show that the band gap of ReX2 can be widely modulated by adjusting the layer numbers and temperature, and the Raman shifts exhibit a redshift with increasing temperature.

Jiaqi Shao et al.

Summary: In this study, high-resolution tip-enhanced photoluminescence microscopy was applied to investigate exciton funneling at nanoscale wrinkles in t2L MoS2 samples. The results provided novel insights into the inhomogeneities of excitonic behaviors at nanoscale and could aid in the rational design of twistronic devices based on 2D materials.

Tip-enhanced nanoscopy of two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides: progress and perspectives

Jiaqi Shao et al.

Summary: The optoelectronic properties of 2D transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) thin layers are strongly influenced by nanoscale defects. Tip-enhanced nanoscopy, such as tip-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (TERS) and tip-enhanced photoluminescence (TEPL), has emerged as a powerful tool to characterize the localized phonon and exciton behaviors of TMDs and heterojunctions (HJs) at the nanoscale. This article summarizes the recent progress of TERS and TEPL in characterizing typical defects in TMDs, investigating local strain and its dynamic control of phonon and exciton behaviors, characterizing TMD HJs, and utilizing TERS and TEPL with optoelectronic sensitive electronic scanning probe microscopy (SPM) in TMD applications.

In Situ Visualization of Optoelectronic Behavior of Grain Boundaries in Monolayer WSe2 at the Nanoscale

Weitao Su et al.

Summary: The optoelectronic behavior of grain boundaries (GBs) in monolayer (1L) WSe2 was investigated using a combination of tip-enhanced optical microscopy and electrical-mode atomic force microscopy. The study showed that the variation in optoelectronic behavior at the GBs is caused by dislocation structures and midgap states generated in the GBs. This understanding of 1L WSe2's optoelectronic properties is important for high-performance optoelectronic devices.

Mechanical origin of martensite-like structures in two-dimensional ReS2

Lingli Huang et al.

Summary: Research has shown that two-dimensional material ReS2 is influenced by substrate-induced straining during growth, leading to the formation of martensite-like domain structures that affect its mechanical properties. Factors such as cooling rate, flake size, and substrate also impact the formation process of martensite-like domains, demonstrating the mechanical origin of the transformation.
