Deformation Mechanism of Amorphous Plasticized Poly(vinyl butyral)

Changzhu Lv et al.

Summary: In this study, the deformation mechanism of amorphous polymeric materials was investigated using ultrasmall-angle X-ray scattering. A stretch-induced phase separation behavior was observed in plasticized poly(vinyl butyral) (PVB) for the first time. The phase separation is influenced by stress concentration and the network structure, and the phase size increases with strain.

Precise Characterization of the Sequence Distribution of Poly(vinyl butyral) (PVB) by 2D-NMR and Isotope Enrichment

Xu Chen et al.

Summary: The complicated chemical structure and acetalization mechanism of poly(vinyl butyral) (PVB) were revealed using multidimensional NMR with 13C labeling. Isotope enrichment helped determine the sequence distribution of vinyl butyral (VB) and vinyl alcohol (VA) monomers in the PVB backbone, while NMR experiments identified primary, secondary, and tertiary carbons. Various 2D-NMR experiments established coupling through chemical bond or space correlation. The resolved information from 1H and 13C NMR spectra provided insights into the acetalization reaction mechanism.

Time-domain NMR in polyolefin research

Victor Litvinov et al.

Summary: This review covers the applications of time-domain proton NMR (TD-NMR) for studying polyolefins. The capabilities of the method, such as analyzing phase composition, determining domain sizes, and studying the effect of crystallization conditions, are discussed. Examples are given to demonstrate the effectiveness of TD-NMR in establishing structure-processing-property relationships in polymers.

Evidence for complexation-induced micro-extension of poly(vinyl alcohol) chains in interphase and amorphous domains from solid-state NMR

Yahui Li et al.

Summary: The three-phase structure of poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA)-iodine complexes was studied using solid-state NMR. The micro-extension of the PVA segment in the interphase and amorphous domains was confirmed, and it was found that the increasing iodine concentration led to an increment in the hydrogen-bonded C(H) fractions in both the amorphous and interphase domains. The results provide evidence for the aggregation model for the formation mechanism of PVA-iodine complexes.

On the Immobilized Polymer Fraction in Attractive Nanocomposites: Tg Gradient versus Interfacial Layer

Carlos Fernandez-de-Alba et al.

Summary: This study investigates the slowing down of polymer dynamics in nanocomposites, using low-field NMR relaxometry to quantify the fraction of immobilized polymer on filler surfaces. Two different modeling approaches are used to explain the slowing down phenomenon, with NMR results indicating that the segmental relaxation of the immobilized layer is approximately 1 decade slower than in bulk polymer.

Dynamic Heterogeneity of Filler-Associated Interphases in Polymer Nanocomposites

Horst Schneider et al.

Summary: Interphases with mobility gradients in dynamically inhomogeneous polymer systems may play key roles in material performance. Particle-filled rubber, with favorable rubber-filler interactions, is an example where nanoscale immobilized layers and regions of intermediate mobility may form. Dynamic heterogeneities, including nanometer-sized subdomains, could also be present as indicated by short-time data supporting their presence.

Zhijie Xia et al.

Summary: The chain dynamics and crystalline network structure of P(3HB-co-4HB) were systematically investigated using various solid-state NMR techniques, revealing the exclusion of 4HB unit from the crystalline domain, absence of micro-phase separation in the amorphous domain, and absence of motions on a timescale of 100 mu s and below in the crystalline domain.
