Activatable molecular probes for fluorescence-guided surgery, endoscopy and tissue biopsy

Yan Zhang et al.

Summary: Activatable molecular probes have shown great potential in surgical imaging and diagnosis by offering high target-to-background ratios with high specificity and sensitivity through turning on their signals upon reaction with targeted biomolecules. They not only ensure complete resection of malignant tissues, but also better preservation of vital organs and tissues during surgical procedures.

The exquisite integration of ESIPT, PET and AIE for constructing fluorescent probe for Hg(II) detection and poisoning

Xiang Cheng et al.

Summary: In this study, a novel fluorescent probe was developed for efficient detection of Hg2+ by combining aggregation-induced emission and excited state intramolecular proton transfer characteristics. The probe exhibited good selectivity, short response time, and a low detection limit. Its successful application in real samples, cells, and drug evaluation demonstrated its superiority in practical Hg2+ detection.

Rational design of shortwave infrare d (SWIR) fluorescence probe: Cooperation of ICT and ESIPT processes for sensing endogenous cysteine

Maoju Chang et al.

Summary: By employing a fluorophore design strategy that integrates intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) and excited-state intermolecular proton transfer (ESIPT), the shortwave infrared (SWIR) sensing of endogenous cysteine has been successfully achieved. This approach expands the toolbox for in vivo sensing and enables accurate analysis in clinical applications.

Development of a novel latent electrochemical molecular substrate for the real-time monitoring of the tumor marker aminopeptidase N in live cells, whole blood and urine

Sakthivel Kumaravel et al.

Summary: This study developed a novel electrochemical molecular substrate for real-time monitoring of APN activity in tumors. The substrate showed high sensitivity and specificity towards APN, with no interference from other biological species. The results of APN quantification in whole blood and urine using this substrate were consistent with commercially available fluorometric assay kits.

Hyperpolarized (1-13C)Alaninamide Is a Multifunctional In Vivo Sensor of Aminopeptidase N Activity, pH, and CO2

Alice Radaelli et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the feasibility of using spin hyperpolarization to perform real-time metabolic imaging of carbon-13-labeled substrates. It shows that hyperpolarized L-(1-13C)alaninamide can serve as a probe to detect the activity of the cell-surface tumor marker aminopeptidase-N. Furthermore, it reveals that the chemical shift of alaninamide is pH-sensitive and can be used to measure the pH levels in different compartments.

Global cancer statistics 2020: GLOBOCAN estimates of incidence and mortality worldwide for 36 cancers in 185 countries

Hyuna Sung et al.

Summary: The global cancer burden in 2020 saw an estimated 19.3 million new cancer cases and almost 10.0 million cancer deaths. Female breast cancer surpassed lung cancer as the most commonly diagnosed cancer, while lung cancer remained the leading cause of cancer death. These trends are expected to rise in 2040, with transitioning countries experiencing a larger increase compared to transitioned countries due to demographic changes and risk factors associated with globalization and a growing economy. Efforts to improve cancer prevention measures and provision of cancer care in transitioning countries will be crucial for global cancer control.
