Accelerating the energy transition to achieve carbon neutrality

Lizette De la Pena et al.

Summary: The transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy systems is crucial for developing countries to achieve carbon neutrality and address energy security issues. In the case of Mexico, gradual and rapid transition scenarios have been developed, with the latter showing potential for reducing CO2 emissions and moving closer to carbon neutrality by 2050. The study emphasizes the importance of prioritizing renewable energy sources, energy efficiency improvements, and coal phase-out to align with global efforts in combating climate change.

Effect of conductivity, viscosity, and density of water-in-salt electrolytes on the electrochemical behavior of supercapacitors: molecular dynamics simulations and in situ characterization studies

Debora A. C. da Silva et al.

Summary: In this study, molecular dynamics simulations and in situ experimental studies were used to investigate the effects of replacing conventional aqueous-based electrolytes with concentrated water-in-salt systems in supercapacitors. The use of water-in-salt electrolytes was found to increase the electrochemical stability window of the supercapacitor, enabling a wider cell voltage range and specific energy. However, this also led to changes in the physicochemical properties, such as reduced interaction between water molecules and electrodes.

Hydrogen Bond Interpenetrated Agarose/PVA Network: A Highly Ionic Conductive and Flame-Retardant Gel Polymer Electrolyte

Tingting Yan et al.

Summary: This research disrupts the high crystallinity of PVA by forming hydrogen bonds with natural agarose macromolecules, creating a three-dimensional network that offers high water retention and channels for optimized Li-O coordination bond formation. The AP-GPE shows excellent specific capacitance in SSCs, and the characteristics of agarose and -OH groups help enhance the safety of SSCs by reducing flammability.

Graphene oxide enhanced ionic liquid plasticisation of chitosan/alginate bionanocomposites

Pei Chen et al.

Summary: The effect of graphene oxide or reduced graphene oxide on chitosan/alginate matrices is highly dependent on the type of plasticiser used. Glycerol-plasticised matrices showed increased chitosan crystallinity and ductility when including graphene oxide, while matrices plasticised by [C(2)mim][OAc] exhibited improved mechanical properties and reduced surface hydrophilicity when graphene oxide was added. Reduced graphene oxide was less effective than graphene oxide in promoting chitosan-alginate interactions and even increased surface hydrophilicity, but resulted in reduced crystallinity and higher ionic conductivity in both plasticiser types.

Optimization of acetonitrile/water content in hybrid deep eutectic solvent for graphene/MoS2 hydrogel-based supercapacitors

Chia-Wei Lien et al.

Summary: In this study, a co-solvent-in-deep eutectic solvent system was developed by mixing water and acetonitrile with a typical DES electrolyte. The addition of co-solvents improved the conductivity and flame-retardant properties of the DES, leading to a wide electrochemical stability window. Furthermore, a hydrogel consisting of 1T-MoS2 and reduced graphene oxide was used as electrode materials for supercapacitors, demonstrating high energy density and capacitance retention after cycles.
