Microbial hydrolysis of atrazine in contaminated groundwater

Mohammad Arar et al.

Summary: The degradation of atrazine in contaminated groundwater adjacent to its production plant was investigated. It was found that there is a high potential for microbial degradation of atrazine in groundwater enrichment cultures, even when atrazine served as the sole nitrogen source. In-situ degradation was reflected by a high percentage of metabolites in field samples.

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances in water and wastewater: A critical review of their global occurrence and distribution

Sudarshan Kurwadkar et al.

Summary: Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), as anthropogenic organic pollutants, are widely distributed in the aquatic environment and have adverse effects on human health and ecology. This review critically evaluates the global occurrence and distribution of PFAS in water and discusses the evolving regulatory responses to mitigate the risks associated with PFAS. The study highlights the need for international cooperation in managing PFAS contamination.

Numerical Hilbert space solution of fractional Sobolev equation in (1+1)-dimensional space

Omar Abu Arqub et al.

Summary: This paper solves the (1+1)-dimensional space-time fractional Sobolev equation with the condition of the Caputo fractional derivative using the reproducing kernel Hilbert space method, and expresses the solutions using a numerical-analytic approach. The research finds that this technique has the capability to handle fractional models.

Experimental and numerical study for the inertial dependence of non-Darcy coefficient in rough single fractures

Kun Xing et al.

Summary: This study investigated the influence of fluid flow inertial effect on the non-Darcy coefficient through experiments and numerical simulations. The results showed a relationship between the non-Darcy coefficient and the fluid inertial effect, indicating the importance of considering both geometric properties and fluid inertia in studying fracture flow behavior. The study also proposed an improved quantification model of the non-Darcy coefficient and a new critical Reynolds number prediction model that considers the coupling effect of fluid and media properties.

Reutilization of gangue wastes in underground backfilling mining: Overburden aquifer protection

Dan Ma et al.

Summary: Gangue backfilling mining (GBM) can effectively alleviate gangue pollution and protect overburden aquifers. The hydraulic properties and deformation behaviors of granular gangues were studied, showing that these properties vary with the original grain size grade and stress rate. An improved model based on fractal dimension was found to have better accuracy in predicting permeability evolution compared to the traditional Kruger model.

Characterizing the scaling coefficient ω between viscous and inertial permeability of fractures

Kun Xing et al.

Summary: The study focused on quantitatively analyzing flow in fractures using Forchheimer models, revealing the relationship between viscous and inertial permeability in single fractures. Results showed that the Forchheimer model fit non-linear fluid flow in various artificial single fractures, and a scaling coefficient omega could predict inertial permeability based on viscous permeability. The fluctuation range of omega was related to medium types, with vertical single fractures producing larger omega. Omega was inversely proportional to inertial effects, roughness, and aperture, providing a basis for further quantification of non-Darcy flow.

Effect of slippery boundary on solute transport in rough-walled rock fractures under different flow regimes

Jia-Qing Zhou et al.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of slippery boundary on solute transport in rough-walled rock fractures under different flow regimes. The results showed that the slippery boundary has a profound influence on both microscale and macroscale solute transport behaviors, with the influence becoming more significant with increasing hydraulic gradient and transition from Darcy to nonDarcian flow regimes. The study also highlighted the need for further research on the effect of slippery boundary in larger-scale fractured rock aquifers and the development of predictive models for complex geological environments.

Large-sample evidence on the impact of unconventional oil and gas development on surface waters

Pietro Bonetti et al.

Summary: The study found that the impact of unconventional oil and gas development on water quality is minimal, with slight increases in barium, chloride, and strontium concentrations under specific conditions. These impacts were most pronounced 91 to 180 days after well spudding, and were influenced by the amount of produced water and the salinity of the formations.

Contaminant transport in heterogeneous aquifers: A critical review of mechanisms and numerical methods of non-Fickian dispersion

Zhilin Guo et al.

Summary: Natural aquifers often display complex physical and chemical heterogeneities, leading to anomalous transport phenomena. This anomalous transport can cause continuous deterioration of water quality and rapid spreading of pollutants, as well as constraining the efficacy of groundwater remediation. Comprehensive studies on the impacts of non-Fickian dispersion on contaminant transport and remediation are still needed.
