Physicochemical and Biotic Changes and the Phylogenetic Evenness of Microbial Community in Soil Subjected to Phytoreclamation

Yong-Zhi Yang et al.

Summary: The study found that phytoreclamation affects the soil microbial community mainly through the rhizosphere environment and plant species, with greater differences observed in the rhizosphere of turfgrass. Additionally, some physicochemical properties in the soil can influence the composition of the microbial community.

Effects of composite materials and revegetation on soil nutrients, chemical and microbial properties in rare earth tailings

Weijie Dai et al.

Summary: The mining of ionic rare earth elements in Ganzhou has resulted in the destruction of vegetation in large areas of barren tailings. This study investigated the effects of soil additives combined with revegetation on the preservation of nutrients and microbial communities in the tailings. The results showed that the additives could buffer soil acidification, delay the loss of soil organic matter, and reduce the runoff loss of nitrogen compounds and sulfate. The bacterial diversity increased in some treatments, while fungal diversity remained unchanged. The microbial communities in the treatments showed closer interactions compared to the control group.

Sulfate-reducing bacterial community shifts in response to acid mine drainage in the sediment of the Hengshi watershed, South China

Yanping Bao et al.

Summary: This study investigated the distribution, diversity, and abundance of sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) in the Hengshi River, a site continually contaminated by acid mine drainage (AMD). High-throughput sequencing revealed the high diversity and richness of the SRB communities, as well as the impact of AMD contamination on microbial and SRB community structure. Environmental parameters were found to significantly influence the composition and structure of the SRB community, highlighting the importance of understanding indigenous SRB communities for natural AMD attenuation.

Treatment of petroleum hydrocarbon-polluted groundwater with innovative in situ sulfate-releasing biobarrier

K. F. Hsia et al.

Summary: Petroleum hydrocarbons are common pollutants in groundwater, and enhanced bioremediation using sulfate-reducing biobarrier containing sulfate-releasing materials (SRMs) has proven to be an effective and cost-efficient method for cleanup. The optimal sulfate release rate can promote sulfate reduction processes and enhance the remediation of petroleum hydrocarbons. Additionally, the use of SRMs can lead to the detection of bacterial strains with sulfate reduction and petroleum hydrocarbon biodegradation functions, indicating the potential for in situ remediation of petroleum-hydrocarbon plumes.
