Effects on Bioaccumulation, Growth Performance, Hematological Parameters, Plasma Components, and Antioxidant Responses in Starry Flounder (Platichthys stellatus) Exposed to Dietary Cadmium and Ascorbic Acid

Tae-Jun Won et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the toxic effects of dietary Cd and the mitigative effects of AsA supplementation in Starry flounder. The results show that Cd accumulation is highest in the intestine, followed by the kidney, liver, and gills. Dietary AsA significantly reduces Cd accumulation in all tissues. Dietary Cd has adverse effects on growth performance, hematological parameters, plasma components, and antioxidant responses, while dietary AsA restores these parameters.

Exposure of Goniopora columna to polyethylene microplastics (PE-MPs): Effects of PE-MP concentration on extracellular polymeric substances and microbial community

Chang-Mao Hung et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of microplastic (MP) concentration on the microbial community and extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) of a representative scleractinian coral. The results showed that high MP concentration caused changes in the abundance of certain bacterial groups in the MP-associated EPS. The study also identified humic-like and fulvic-like substances as critical components produced by microbial activity.

Current status and future perspectives of microplastic pollution in typical cryospheric regions

Yulan Zhang et al.

Summary: The cryosphere refers to the frozen areas on Earth, including snow and ice, which are being increasingly polluted by microplastics. This review highlights the distribution, transport pathways, and differences in microplastics found in snow and ice across cryospheric regions. It emphasizes the urgent need for improved standard procedures in sampling, pretreatment, and identification of microplastics. The study suggests that sea ice and atmospheric transport play important roles in the temporal storage and release of microplastics, while non-polar cryospheric regions may serve as important receptors of microplastics from mid-latitude emissions, posing potential climate risks.

Probiotics ameliorate polyethylene microplastics-induced liver injury by inhibition of oxidative stress in Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus)

Rui Dong et al.

Summary: This study found that the commercial probiotic AquaStar (R) Growout had a protective effect against polystyrene microplastic particle (PS-MPs)-mediated hepatic oxidative stress in Nile tilapia. The administration of probiotics reversed liver damage caused by PS-MPs, reduced levels of harmful substances, increased antioxidant capacity, and restored enzyme activity. In addition, probiotics supplementation decreased inflammation and counteracted the production of reactive oxygen species. These findings highlight the potential of probiotics in mitigating the negative effects of microplastic pollution on aquatic organisms.

Chronic exposure to high-density polyethylene microplastic through feeding alters the nutrient metabolism of juvenile yellow perch (Perca flavescens)

Xing Lu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of high-density polyethylene (HDPE) on yellow perch and found that HDPE did not significantly affect the growth of the fish. However, dietary exposure to HDPE decreased the nutritional quality of the fish, altered nutrient metabolism, and affected the intestinal histopathology and microbiota community.

In vitro toxicity from a physical perspective of polyethylene microplastics based on statistical curvature change analysis

Daheui Choi et al.

Summary: Microplastics, which decompose into small fragments under external stress, are posing a significant threat to the environment. This study demonstrates the in vitro toxicity of microplastics with two different shapes, showing that higher concentration and rough structure can lead to toxicity towards cells. The statistical analysis confirms that irregular-shaped microplastics may adversely affect cells and potentially pose a risk to human health in the real environment.

Long-term exposure to virgin and seawater exposed microplastic enriched-diet causes liver oxidative stress and inflammation in gilthead seabream Spans aurata, Linnaeus 1758

X. Capo et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the physiological response of gilthead seabream fed with LDPE microplastics, observing an increase in antioxidant enzyme activities, particularly in the seawater exposed group. Despite a slight recovery after 30 days of depuration, the elevated antioxidant defenses were not sufficient to prevent oxidative damage in the liver.

Fish Ingest Microplastics Unintentionally

Bowen Li et al.

Summary: The study found that different fish species have different responses to ingesting microplastics, with actively feeding fish consuming more. All observed species did not actively capture microfibers but instead passively sucked them in while breathing. Fish exhibited a behavior of rejecting microfibers, but some fibers were still found in their bodies.

Toxic effects on bioaccumulation, hematological parameters, oxidative stress, immune responses and neurotoxicity in fish exposed to microplastics: A review

Jun-Hwan Kim et al.

Summary: Exposure to microplastics in aquatic environments leads to bioaccumulation in fish, affecting hematological properties, changing blood physiology, inducing imbalance in reactive oxygen species production and antioxidant capacity, causing oxidative damage, impacting immune responses, and causing neurotoxicity. This study examined various indicators of microplastic toxicity in fish to facilitate the identification of biomarkers following exposure.

Assessment of the effect of long-term exposure to microplastics and depuration period in Sparus aurata Linnaeus, 1758: Liver and blood biomarkers

Antonia Solomando et al.

Summary: Exposure to LDPE-MPs had significant impacts on oxidative stress and inflammation biomarkers in the liver and plasma of Sparus aurata, while no significant changes were observed in erythrocytes. During the depuration period, most of these biomarkers showed a trend of recovery and reached levels similar to those of the control group. This indicates a certain degree of reversibility in the effects of LDPE-MPs on S. aurata.
