Dynamic variations in DOM and DBPs formation potential during surface water treatment by ozonation-nanofiltration: Using spectroscopic indices approach

Muhammad Saboor Siddique et al.

Summary: The combination of ozone and nanofiltration in drinking water treatment effectively separates dissolved organic matter, reducing disinfection by-products formation. Ozone treatment decreases molecular weight of DOM and enhances removal of DBP precursors. Spectroscopic indices are useful in tracking DOM changes and DBP formation potential.

Comparative Toxicity Analyses from Different Endpoints: Are New Cyclic Disinfection Byproducts (DBPs) More Toxic than Common Aliphatic DBPs?

Yun Wu et al.

Summary: The study compared the in vitro and in vivo toxicity of cyclic DBPs and aliphatic DBPs, revealing different toxicity rank orders with application of different endpoints. A Pearson correlation analysis of DBP toxicity data showed high correlation between observed cytotoxicity in Hep G2 cells and zebrafish embryo toxicity with previously reported in vitro and in vivo toxicity. The study also established two QSAR models to interpret the toxicity mechanisms of DBPs from different endpoints.

Drivers of Disinfection Byproduct Cytotoxicity in US Drinking Water: Should Other DBPs Be Considered for Regulation?

Joshua M. Allen et al.

Summary: This study identifies key drivers of toxicity in drinking water in the United States, focusing on disinfection byproducts (DBPs). The research highlights the importance of unregulated haloacetonitriles and iodoacetic acids as significant toxicity drivers, especially in waters impacted by seawater. The findings suggest that future research should prioritize these DBPs for potential regulation.

Bio- and photo-lability of dissolved organic matter in the Pearl River (Zhujiang) estuary

Mengting Li et al.

Summary: This study investigated the bio- and photo-lability of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in different areas of the Pearl River estuary. The headwater had higher levels of bio- and photo-labile DOM compared to the mixing zone and mouth, while the latter two had higher levels of bio- and photo-refractory DOM. The impact of pre-biotransformation on DOM photodegradation varied depending on the specific site. UV absorption coefficients were indicators of bio- and photo-refractory DOC, and the relative proportions of transparent and chromophoric DOM controlled the turnover of biolabile DOC and the effect of pre-biotransformation on DOM photodegradation.

Insight into variations of DOM fractions in different latitudinal rural black-odor waterbodies of eastern China using fluorescence spectros-copy coupled with structure equation model

Kuotian Lu et al.

Summary: This study collected 81 samples of black-odor waterbodies (BOWs) from rural areas in eastern China. The fluorescence index (FI) and biological index (BIX) deduced from excitation-emission matrices (EEMs) were used to analyze the composition and properties of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in the BOWs. The results showed that the sources and humification degree of DOM varied among different latitudinal regions. The structure equation model indicated that microbial activity and pollution sources were potential factors influencing the formation and evolution of rural BOWs.

Formation of chlorinated halobenzoquinones during chlorination of free aromatic amino acids

Jiaxing Zhao et al.

Summary: This study investigated the formation of chlorinated halobenzoquinones from three free aromatic amino acids during chlorination, and explained the formation pathways based on detected intermediates and influencing factors. The results showed that four chlorinated halobenzoquinones were formed, with 2,6-dichloro-1,4-benzoquinone being the dominant species. The yields of chlorinated halobenzoquinones were affected by free chlorine dosage, pH, and temperature. Ten intermediates were successfully detected and the formation pathways were validated using theoretical calculation.

Halocyclopentadienes: An Emerging Class of Toxic DBPs in Chlor(am)inated Drinking Water

Jiafu Li et al.

Summary: Although more than 700 disinfection by-products (DBPs) have been identified, most DBPs in drinking water are still unknown. This study identified six new alicyclic DBPs in chlorinated and chloraminated drinking water and proposed their formation pathways. These new DBPs have significantly higher toxicity compared to regulated DBPs, highlighting their importance in drinking water quality and human health exposure.

Halohydroxybenzonitriles as a new group of halogenated aromatic DBPs in drinking water: Are they of comparable risk to halonitrophenols?

Shaoyang Hu et al.

Summary: A new group of halogenated aromatic disinfection byproducts (DBPs), called halohydroxybenzonitriles (HHBNs), were detected in drinking water samples. These HHBNs exhibited high cytotoxicity and showed transformation during chlorination. Compared to regulated DBPs, HHBNs had similar concentration-cytotoxicity contribution and slightly weaker stability, making them a concern in drinking water.

Effect of dissolved organic matter and its fractions on disinfection by-products formation upon karst surface water

Hui Zhou et al.

Summary: In this study, the formation of disinfection by-products (DBP) from dissolved organic matter (DOM) in typical karst surface water was investigated. The study found that both terrigenous and autochthonous DOM were critical precursors for DBP formation, and the formation of DBPs was closely correlated with variations in organic matter chemistry. The study also found that DBP formation was significantly higher during drought periods. Additionally, the study revealed that hydrophobic components had higher DBP formation potential compared to hydrophilic components.

Hongyan Zhai et al.

Summary: This study investigates the formation of disinfection byproducts (DBPs) during chlorination and chloramination of algal organic matter (AOM) from four algal species. It identifies the factors that affect the types and yields of DBPs under different conditions. The results show that the concentrations of disinfectant, pH, and bromide can all influence the formation of DBPs during chlorination and chloramination processes.

How Much of the Total Organic Halogen and Developmental Toxicity of Chlorinated Drinking Water Might Be Attributed to Aromatic Halogenated DBPs?

Jiarui Han et al.

Summary: The study developed an effective method with ultraperformance liquid chromatography to analyze the DBP mixture from chlorination of bromide-rich raw water, separating them into aliphatic and aromatic fractions. The results showed that aromatic fractions accounted for a significant portion of the TOX and developmental toxicity in the original chlorinated water samples, indicating that the overall developmental toxicity of chlorinated water is mainly attributed to aromatic halo-DBPs with high bioconcentration potential.
